On Day One of our recent dig in Norfolk, Derek and Lawrence caught up with Anglo-Saxon expert Helena Hamerow from Oxford University, to answer your questions.
Helena shared some fascinating insights on status and grave goods, early Anglo-Saxon Christianity, and the debate over migration and invasion following the fall of Roman Britain.
You may remember Helena from her appearance on Time Team back in Series 17, when she helped us to locate a colossal Anglo-Saxon hall at Sutton Cour...

In our latest post-excavation analysis instalment, Matt Clark provides a brief overview of the photogrammetry used to create the incredible 3D models we've been sharing.
You may remember a mysterious object discovered at Broughton Roman villa that we posted a while back – at the time, one patron described it as a Bronze Age spacehopper! In fact, as Dani explains, it's a post-Medieval crotal bell, likely worn by livestock.

Before the recent digs, we began a series of post-excavation videos from last year's investigation of Broughton Roman Villa.
In our second instalment, Dani and Naomi discuss what animal bones can tell us about the people who lived and worked on site. As they highlight, the archaeological process is continuous and ongoing, as new theories, perspectives and evidence come to light.
Look out for the next part in the series, coming soon, as well as details of the post-ex process for th...

It's time for another 3D model, on this occasion of the beautiful Halston Chapel, created by Adam Stanford using aerial photogrammetry. The trees around the chapel have been removed digitally, giving us a closer look at the building and its immediate surrounds.
This chapel is the only building currently standing on the site of the possible Knights Hospitaller preceptory - but is it a later addition to the landscape or is there a direct link to the Order that once resided in the area? Ma...

It's here, the third and final Site Walkabout of our Knights Hospitaller preceptory dig in Shropshire. The mist and rain have dissipated, leaving us with beautiful sunshine to complete Day Three. The archaeology has been pretty good too!
We're off now to film the final scene and there are rumours of a keg of beer supplied with the local brewery Stonehouse... oh and some gin from Shropshire Distillery, too... thanks guys!
But the show's not over. In fact, it's just getting started....

In our next layer of the site data map, we're looking at near infrared imagery collected from the aerial survey.
We'll have a chat with aerial surveyor Adam Stanford, as well as data whizz Pete Spencer, to put these models into context and explain how the various techniques can help us to identify archaeological features or otherwise inform the process of piecing together the past.
Note: Map is for personal viewing only and not for distribution or publication.

Here's the third layer of data to add to our site map.
If you cast your mind back to the Site Walkabout on Day One, our aerial surveyor Adam Stanford discussed some of the newer survey techniques that we now have at our disposal. GNVDI is one such example, which stands for 'green normalised vegetation difference index'.
Put simply, it measures the greenness (or 'health') of vegetation, and the technique has a range of applications, not least in agricultural and environmental studi...

Derek and Lawrence have returned to the site following this morning's antics at Whittington Castle. Our centre of interest is just a few miles down the road, on the estate of the beautiful Halston Hall.

The day is drawing to a close, the team will soon be downing tools and getting ready for a well-earned ...
