This little diddy was hanging out in my songs folder, mostly unfinished. And when I say mostly unfinished, I mean it was basically just the opening log drum bit.

Ok I did the thing again. This track has been hanging out in my "unfinished songs" folder for a long time (almost 2 years actually). The thing is, it wasn't actually "unfinished", it was just unreleased.

A spooky theme?! But it's not even October!
Yesterday was a "scrap 4 ideas before landing on something" kind of day. Well, mostly. I don't think my initial ideas are going to be scrapped, just saved for another day.
After struggling with things for a while, I just grabbed my midi guitar and rolled with whatever popped out, not worrying about key or structure. And naturally when you do that kind of thing, you get some pretty tense/atmospheric music...

I received a request recently asking for something in the style of Gerudo Valley, and honestly I'm surprised I haven't done this before...that song is the thing of legends!
The most difficult part of a tune like this is getting the strumming guitar sound right using midi samples. When you strum a guitar, all the notes aren't being played at the exact same time. There is a slight offset as the pick moves across the strings.

1) It's a good exercise to take an existing melody and re-imagine it in a different context.
2) It increases the value of the existing songs, as now there is a sense of leitmotif happening across the archives.

Well, I went from a rough writing day on Monday to an easy breezy writing day on Thursday! Love when that happens.
The chord progression and structure for this song really just fell out, which is great because it definitely goes places. Heeyyyyy Happy Tuesday Party Members!
Ok, I know I'm biased but I think this one is really cool. I tried a technique that Uematsu talked about using when he wrote "One Winged Angel." For that tune, he said he spent a week or so just writing little ideas, like one or two bars. Then he just put it all together like a puzzle.
