It's amazing what can be learnt from a small pottery sherd. The type of pot, the fabric it was made from and even where and when it was made.
But thanks to the wonders of lipid analysis, we can often tell whether it was used to cook foods, the type of foods cooked β and even if it was boiled or fried!
How does it work? Dani Wootton caught up recently with Dr Julie Dunne of the University of Bristol to find out.
As Julie explains in this fascinating interview, she was intri...

We've just received this amazing 3D model of a find, discovered during our dig at the Broughton Roman villa, Oxfordshire (courtesy of 3D maestro, Matt Clark).
But we need YOUR help in identifying it!
What era is it from? What is it made of? And what does it actually do? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
On first impression it may resemble a Bronze Age spacehopper, but it's actually much smaller and will easily fit in the palm of your hand.
Our resident ...

There are many logistical challenges we must face when putting together Time Team, some quite unexpected β for example, John Gater's propensity for muscling his way into every scene.
If you don't believe us, take a look at this selection of clips from both our recent digs and the Time Team archives.
And so this brings us to our latest Word of the Day: The 'Gaterbomb'. We know, it's not big, it's certainly not clever, but it's just a bit of silly Friday fun to get us through to t...

Every now and then, our activities bring up an interesting piece of archaeological terminology β perfect for casually dropping into conversation when you wish to impress others with your vast knowledge.
During our recent excavation of the Oxfordshire Roman villa, Derek and Lawrence treated us to the term 'spoliated' when they stumbled upon a derelict farm building, hidden by foliage, just a stone's throw from the main site.
Although this building is evidently a much more recent ...

What's the difference between Medieval and the Middle Ages? What was so dark about the Dark Ages? And was the Great Famine really that great? Dr Eleanor Janega answers these questions and much more, in her concise yet comprehensive guide to the Middle Ages that packs a punch.
'The Middle Ages: A Graphic Guide' is a razor-sharp introduction to a fascinating period, proving that history need not be stuffy, ably illustrated by Time Team's own graphic artist, Neil Emmanuel, with nods to bot...

As you may have heard, our geophysics team, led by Dr John Gater, have paid a visit to the Royal Burial Ground at Sutton Hoo in recent weeks. We will be sharing much more on this landmark project over time. But for now, our resident GPR guru, Jimmy Adcock, has put together this short video diary for us.
Jimmy was a key member of Time Team for around ten years, bringing his ground penetrating radar expertise to the range of geophysical techniques on offer β and plenty of pranks too!

As you know, Time Team is very much a team effort, including you - our Patrons! However our first two digs would not have been possible without the brilliant local teams and key individuals on the ground who invited the Time Team on site.
We are very grateful to Chris Hosken, James Gossip and the local Meneage Archaeology Group volunteers for inviting us to be part of their incredible discovery in South West Cornwall and providing the ideal site to get our trowels back in the ground.

It gets colder at this time of year here in the UK and many of us are now starting to put the central heating on. Back in Roman Britain, only the grandest buildings had that option!
One clear indication of a relatively high-status Roman building is the presence of box flue tile fragments from a hypocaust system used to heat rooms. We have a wonderful example to share from this September's dig at the Roman villa in Broughton, Oxfordshire.
As well as an incredible 3D model, we're jo...
