It gets colder at this time of year here in the UK and many of us are now starting to put the central heating on. Back in Roman Britain, only the grandest buildings had that option!
One clear indication of a relatively high-status Roman building is the presence of box flue tile fragments from a hypocaust system used to heat rooms. We have a wonderful example to share from this September's dig at the Roman villa in Broughton, Oxfordshire.
