Age brings an increasing obsession with time. The scope and onset is different for everyone. For some, it starts in their thirties. And the 40-year old crisis is a tired but true cliché. This sudden urge to act works a little differently for women, I suppose. That's beside the point. Sooner or later,...

Alright gang, time to vote on what you want the specialisation routine to be for. But first, I have a proposal.
The most effective specialisation routine I've made and followed was the chin-up protocol used to train for a one-arm chin-up. To this day, I've never surpassed the results conceived back then.
At my peak chin-up form, I was 82-84 kg, doing weighted chin-ups with +41 kg for 8 reps, holding a dumbbell between my thighs. This translates to a 154 kg 1RM.
These days...

It's one thing to squat and another to do it properly. And there’s nothing more embarrassing than watching Leangains practitioners squat with bad form. Specifically, poor depth.
I’ve seen lots. One of the worst squats in recent memory was from someone thanking me for curing them of fuckarounditis. Oh, the irony. And straw that broke the camel's back.
While embarrassing, this came as no surprise. With great shame, I've admittedly been blinded by my own presumption...

Met with a friend yesterday. Doctor and researcher, interesting guy. Just started training again after a long layoff. The good doctor is lucky in one sense. Always skinny and struggling to gain weight, his problem is opposite of most.
Told me about the obstacles. First, tracking calories is hard because he eats at work. Second, restaurant attached to the hospital doesn’t serve the best food. Third, he doesn’t have time to prepare meals in advance. Told him the solution. Called me a genius....

Talked with support after few people reported comments not loading or comments disappearing. If shit's not working, read below and act accordingly.

Hey there,
Thanks for your email, Martin. I'm happy to help with this.
Regarding disappearing comments: if you could let me know one patron (or more) that's happening to, I'll take a look. It's likely our third-party spam filter has grabbed the comments. I'll know more when I can take a look at the patrons' acco...

"With this one secret" - My apologies for the lame part of the heading. Obviously, there's not one secret - there are many. I wouldn't necessarily call them secrets, but it looks great in a headline. Best practices is a better name. Let's talk about one of them today.
Q: Any advice on staying lean in the off-season? I find it easy to gain muscle, but always pack on too much fat in the process. :(

Happy Holidays everyone!
And since we're in the middle of sickness season, thought this subject fitting. Enjoy~
Q: No idea what the hell is going on, but I'm sick again. Do you still train when same? Tried today but couldn't come close to my latest numbers.
A: First, define sick. If you have a light cold and simply runny nose, you're good to go. Might not hit any new PRs, but better than sitting on your ass all day watchin...

Welcome to the first Leangains Letter Q&A.
Today we're going to unravel some of the myths and realities of lean bulking.
Q: I'm lean bulking but deathly afraid of putting on fat. Currently eating 300 kcal above maintenance on training days (4x a week) and maintenance on rest days. Is this sufficient?
- Unless you're closing in on your maximum muscular potential, a weekly surplus of 1200 calories is leaving gains on the table. Any beginner or inter...

Patrons have reached out saying comments won't load in some question threads. Have this issue myself with Question Thread 6 where comments 1-40 won't load.
I've reached out to Patreon support and hope for an answer later today. It's kind of a big deal that I'd like solved before publishing the training program (for obvious reasons).
Who else is having issue this issue? Check Question Thread 6 and let me know.

Today's question comes from Patreon contributor Kurt. As custom demands, the answer heads into, dare I say, unexpected territory.
A: Some of my favorite stuff you've written has been about the psychology of dieting. Having worked with so many successful clients, what is the most common mental fuck-up you encounter?
Q: There are many common mental fuck-ups. Going on a binge because you ate a pretzel which wasn't part of the plan. Going on a bi...

Someone suggested a meal thread. Brilliant idea. Read the rules.
Rules (must read)
1. You must list calories and macros per meal or per 100g. Gold star if you also include % breakdown of macronutrients.
For example, a 500-kcal meal with 50g protein contains 40% protein. Another gold star if you include a picture.
2. Clear cooking instructions if called for.

Hey leangang,
Hit 500 Patrons today. Means you can look forward to a new article/Q&A every single week. At the rate this is growing, the 750-goal (training program) isn't far away.
Got big plans for Patreon, but right now, there's only so much I can commit to. And I'd rather commit to a few and do it well, than half-ass everything.
Now, as a 500-goal bonus, and by popular request, here's my NO BS Patreon-exclusive playlist guaranteed to put 50 lbs on your deadlift:...

Last time, I wrote about overreaching and its consequences with a deadlift anecdote. Fast forward to January 26th when another session put me in dire straits.
Some background. Starting January 1st, I reduced training from 4 to 3 times a week. For muscle gain, training 4 times a week is ideal, but I simply don’t have the time now.
Besides, I figured, this change would allow me to experiment. Perhaps verify2018-02-21 01:58:03 +0000 UTC

Q: Is it possible to overtrain on RPT?
A: First off, let's say overreach, because this is what people in the fitness and weight training community actually mean they say "overtrain."
Overreaching is prelude to overtraining and comes with most symptoms associated with. Main difference is overreaching takes up to a few weeks to recover from while recovery from overtraining can take years.
I've worked with a few clients who m...
