Weekly Update 4/28/19

Ok, I got a little testy last week about 1967 Pt. 2. I hated it, but we did hear that some club members thought it was pretty good. And that's awesome! If we're being cranky about a comic you enjoyed, let us know. Our opinions are just that: opinions. And you know what they say about opinions... they're like butts: everyone's got one and you should share them with us! Specifically at mymarvelousyear@gmail.com!

This week's show goes a little all over the place: we talk about spoiler...

Weekly Update 4/21/19

I love this reading club. I love reading superhero comics. I love creating this podcast. But this batch of comics made me reconsider all that love.

There are some interesting introductions here, like the Living Tribunal, Baron Von Strucker, and the Kree, but like a lot of Silver Age concepts, their journey is more interesting than their origins. And what else can I say about a year that delivers not one giant flesh-monster villain, but two (MODOK & Zom)?

This week's epis...

Weekly Update 4/14/19

1966 expanded out the Marvel Universe in a ton of interesting ways, but that upward trajectory seems to level out here in 1967. We get some bright spots like Dr. Doom stealing the Silver Surfer's cosmic power and "Spider-Man No More", but overall this year felt kinda status quo... and from what I can see coming up, that's going to be the case for the next couple years. But hang in there, because we're going to see a lot of new blood coming in soon!

Also, I needed to convince Dave to in...

Weekly Update - 4/7/19

1966 was a landmark year, and a well-needed high point for the reading club. Things are going to level out for a while, before climbing in quality again, so strap in! (Pro tip: I know Avengers Annual #1 is in next week's list, please take my word for it and skip it; it's truly terrible).

On this week's Variant Cover, we discuss sexism in Marvel comics, the appeal of crossover events, how we have underappreciated Alicia Masters, and much more! And we kick off the newest feature of the V...

Bragging isn't very attractive, I know. But I can't help it: I'm really excited for you to hear tomorrow's episode, because I think it's our best work so far. I hope y'all like it as much as we liked putting it together.

1966 continues its hot streak of adding important characters and concepts to the Marvel Universe. We get Ego, the Living Planet, the Green Goblin becomes solidified as Spidey's most complex villain, the Red Skull shows us how evil a villain can be, and Namor has the ju...

Weekly Update - 3/24/19

This is a big year for big ideas in the Marvel Universe! In the first half of our list alone, we get an all-time great Spider-Man story, the coming of Galactus, our first foray into Wakanda, and Johnny Storm goes to college (all equally important events)! We also say goodbye to Steve Ditko, who was instrumental in getting our favorite web-head off the ground. But the baton is seamlessly passed to John Romita Sr, who will, in effect, become the art editor at Marvel for the next few years.

Weekly Update - 3/10/19

Some landmark additions to the Marvel Universe this episode, although their real impact might not be felt for some time. The Sentinels are here, but are less a tool of mutant oppression and more a story about rogue AI. The Inhumans don't strongly differ from their more modern versions, but their society and reason for being will get fully fleshed out over time. Something I think is interesting and unique about the Inhumans is that their first appearance is all about the strange and specific d...

Weekly Update - 3/3/19

Everything about 1965 screams "world-building" to me, in a way that feels novel compared with what came before. Spidey's (arguably) arch-nemesis finally gets some teeth in a two issue arc. Professor X's backstory is tied in with the coming of the Juggernaut. And we start to see that the Avengers is more than just a comic series sharing some heroes, they're an institution that will evolve over time, both the in-universe team and the publication itself. And last but not least, Dr. Strange gets ...

Weekly Update - 2/24/19

We're capping off 1964 with a free-wheeling discussion of the year's strengths and weaknesses, what Captain America really stands for, our favorite relics of the Silver Age, Millie the Model's dress designers, and just how many Justin Bieber and One Direction songs we know (spoiler: not many).

This week's episode is Marvel Year Three: 1964 Variant Cover, due out tomorrow 2/25/19. Please get any 1965 feedback for us to discuss on our next Variant Cover episode by 3/1...

Weekly Update - 2/17/19

The first half of 1964 lured me in with important first appearances, like the Mandarin, Captain America, and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. But once I sat down to read these issues, I realized... despite their importance I wasn't enjoying reading them. They were often clumsy, weird, and slightly racist (just like my great uncle!).

So I approached 1964 Pt. 2 with a hesitant heart... I'd been hurt before. But Fantastic Four stunned me with the best Thing fight we've seen so far, Avenge...

Weekly Update - 2/10/19

1964 is the year Marvel slows the rapid expansion of their roster of new series and started fleshing out what they've already established. The first half of the year thaws out Captain America from the Golden Age, gives Magneto a Brotherhood to command, and introduces Hawkeye and Black Widow (as villains?!). There are still big gaps in quality between series, but as we have the previous two years, you can see the improvements, almost issue by issue! Stick around, because over the next two year...

We're wrapping up 1963 this week with our Variant Cover episode! Dave and I read your feedback, talk about the poll results, and discuss the difference between Silver Age Marvel and DC, how "canon" these early versions of the characters are, and what we think of Stan Lee's understanding of science. And stick around for deleted scenes and outtakes from the 1963 recordings!

Weekly Update - 1/27/19

Moving into the back half of our 1963 list, we see the introduction of three new series: X-Men, The Avengers, and Dr. Strange (in the B stories of Strange Tales). In defiance of my expectations given their modern success, X-Men and Avengers have something of a mediocre start. Over the next few years, I'll be fascinated to see how such iconic superhero groups emerge from these rocky beginnings.

A bit of Patreon admin: Extra Issues is switching up formats. In place of a podcast, it's goi...

Weekly Update - 1/20/19

1962 was a year of groundbreaking debuts, and 1963 continues that trend with the addition of the X-Men, the Wasp, The Avengers, Iron Man, Nick Fury, and Dr. Strange. It is also the year that the Marvel Universe first started to feel like a shared Marvel Universe, with heroes popping up in each other's comics. Some series are still finding their voice and shape (and boy, does X-Men take a while to find its voice), while others are immediately familiar to modern readers.

But having so many people on board during  this phase has been a real encouragement. So again: thanks!
