Where is Tales of Zale? New Update Video!

Dear Patreons,

most of you already know about the things talked about in this video, but I thought I'd share nontheless. Over the past couple of weekend evenings I've been tinkering with this little update video. I felt bad because a lot of people were asking about the series on YouTube whilst I still hadn't put out any statement on that platform (most news would be buried in the livestreams). Now I feel a bit better, and needless to say I had quite a bit of fun putting this together! View Post

Applications, Character Designs and Art Raffle Reminder!

Dear Patrons,

I hope you are all doing well! I’d like to start off with a reminder that you can still sign up for the art raffle to get an original Elva lino-cut. So far only 9 people have signed up for the raffle, and I would like to wait with conducting the draw until at least 15 people are signed up, so please have at it! https://docs...

SIGN UP SHEET for The Tales of Zale Art Raffle #2

Two months have passed and it is once more time for the Tales of Zale Art Raffle. As previously mentioned the intent is now to open up the raffle to more people, and based off of your answers in last week's poll I've decided to keep it pretty simple this time around using a google sign-up sheet linked above. Later rounds may have some games or riddles attached, so enjoy it while you can!

Once more some clarifying rules:

- Every individual is legible to enter the raffle ...

Art Raffle Poll!

Dear everyone!

The time for the next art raffle is approaching, and I gotta find a new approach to signing up that's more accommodating to everybody - whether Patrons or not.

I'd like to hear your preference, so I've created a poll with some of the means by which signing up could take place that I've been thinking about. Feel free to vote for your favorite or add a suggestion in the comments!

All the best,

- Sif

Settling in at the Open Workshop + Sif's Patreon Artbook #004

Dear Patrons,

I hope you're all doing well! It's been about 3 weeks since I arrived at the Open Workshop, and although I've had my nose deep in work for most of the time I've started to settle properly in in most regards.

I've sent out the newest animatic to people in my network (and some of you guys!) for feedback, and while waiting to hear back I've been working on updated character designs, concept bible, and general concept development. It's been really nice to just go a...

Animatic Feedback Sessions Begin! + First 3 minutes' Preview

Dear Patrons,

the sun is shining and it seems that spring is upon us once more. Now seems like a good time for a little update. Since last time I've had my nose deep in the episode 3 animatic; making and re-making parts until I was happy with them. I also spent a week recording and setting up scratch-sound. It might seem like a lot of work for something that won't be in the final product, but it really helps to give an idea of how things will work in the end, and areas to look out for. ...

Sif's Favourite TVPaint Brushes

I've made a little collection of my favorite TVP brushes. I use TVPaint for both animation and backgrounds, partly because I really enjoy working with the program's brushes and color mixing in regards to the latter.

The brushes are a bit of a mix between home-made ones, default ones, some I've found on forums and a few leftovers from previous productions.

As I continue down the line of production on Tales of Zale Episode 3 I will come back to this post and update it with new...

Changes to the Art Raffle + Streaming & Storyboarding News

Dear Patrons,

First thing's first I'd like to inform that I am making some changes to the Art Raffle. A couple of days ago I was approached by the Patreon support team who kindly informed me that the raffle format did not comply with their Terms of Use. Thinking about it now and with the ongoing lootbox-gambling debates I'm a bit annoyed at myself for not figuring as much, but I can only attribute my oversight to over-excitement. I'm very sorry for any inconvenience or slight disappoint...

The First Patreon Art Raffle has Concluded!

Hi dear Patrons! I very spontaneously decided to try and livestream the raffle draw to document it - feel free to jump on over and get the result live!

Update: Congrats to ROBBIE W for winning this month's Patreon raffle - I've sent out a message with further details. Livestreaming the draw might've been a sudden decision, but it was really cozy, so I think I'll keep doing it like that from now on... but next time I'll warn more ahead of time!

I look forward to seeing you at...

Patreon Revamp Complete! + New Art Book PDF

Dear Patrons,

I hope you are doing well and are finding the Patreon optimizations to your satisfaction! I have finished giving the page a total re-haul and hope it's a bit easier to navigate now. Among the new additions are the "featured tags" on the left side of the page, an updated "about" section, and buttons you can click to be taken to more information about each Patreon reward.

I'm really looking forward to doing the art raffle next Tuesday, but in the meanwhile, I've ...

Patreon Credits in Tales of Zale Episode 3

Dear Patrons,

As you know I intend to thank everybody who has pledged along the way in the Tales of Zale episode 3 'thank you' credits. The episode is still a good ways off, but I thought I would rather get ahead of things and make sure to get them right.

Below is a link to the full Patreon thank you list. If you for some reason find that you are not on the list despite being a Patreon supporter, or that you would rather be credited under a different name than your username, then ...

Patreon Raffle

**UPDATE 03/13/19**

In order to comply with Patreon's Terms of Use the raffle will be opened up to non-patrons as well and everyone will get an equal chance to win! I will re-format the raffle and create a sign-up form (or perhaps a quiz or game?) in time for the next scheduled draw. I'm terribly sorry for my oversight and any inconvenience or confusion it might have caused. I'm still very much looking forward to giving these lino-cuts out to supporters of Tales...

Our Graduation Film, 'Ur Aska' is out! + "Sif's Patreon Art Book #001"

Dear Patrons,

This week our graduation film, ‘Ur Aska’ was released online. It seems only appropriate that I should share it with you, as well as the associated bachelor thesis I previously promised.

As you might have seen I’m in the midst of revamping the Patreon page. Right now I’ve made a new profile pic and banner and sorted the tags better so they can now be used to navigate to different kinds of posts from the main page.

Looking back at all those past ...

January Update 2019: Graduated, Prepping and Learning!

Dear Patrons,

As always I hope this post finds you well.

I wanted to put out a small update in the midst of my current preparations. These preparations include all the things stated in my last message. I've been experimenting with some Tales of Zale lino prints for the art raffle I mentioned, and I've made good progress on a new livestreaming setup that should help to showcase some more of my process as I get into the nitty-gritty of producing ToZ episode 3. Speaking of which, I'v...

Back from Ireland - Looking forward to 2019!

Dear Patreons,

As usual, I hope you are all doing well and enjoying yourselves in these warm holiday times.

As the year comes to an end I want to make one last update to round off 2018. I was aiming to make a video just like last year, but with a cold keeping down my voice and lots of stuff to take care of before returning to Viborg that one is going to be slightly delayed. For now, we’ll get by with text!

It’s been a year full of adventures, and I feel like I’ve...

I've arrived in Ireland + another Animatic version!

Dear Patreons,

Yet another month has swiftly passed and we're already half-way into September. I hope you're still feeling well now that the colder autumn days are upon us.

As for what I've been up to it's the usual. For quite a while a lot of smaller details were my focus and I never thought it was quite enough for a proper full update.

On a personal level I moved out of my apartment (as there was no reason to pay for that while away on internship) and spent a lot of ...

Tales of Zale - Animatic Extract

Dear Patreons,

Last week I promised you an extract from the Episode 3 animatic I've been working on, and this week that's what you're getting!

This particular scene has always been one of the most difficult for me to storyboard in episode 3. Because of how the previous episode ended I knew Zale would have to encounter Morpheus again when returning to the ruins, and the scene would have to push this episode's plot forward in some way. But it was difficult for me to do in a way that...

Tales of Zale - Comp Tests Continue

Dear Patreons,

My time at La Poudrère was a busy one, but also very rewarding in terms of the content I got to make. From the day I arrived I could feel a change in the way I went about drawing and approaching animation. There's something very magical and refreshing about working in a new place, full of outside inspiration, and it really does affect my work.

I've been struggling with Zale's different walk cycles for a while, but it came pretty naturally in this shot. Moreover I h...

Tales of Zale - First Draft Bible

Dear Patreons,

During my time at La Poudrière one of the things we went more in-depth with was the creation of bibles. Unfortunately due to legal reasons I can't show you any of the projects that we worked on developing over there, but at the end of the long work days I would feel very inspired to take what I had learned home with me and implement it into Tales of Zale. This is how I came to create what I'd consider a first draft bible for the project. A "bible", for those who don't kn...

Back from France

It seems like tradition this time of year that I return from some sort of trip and apologize for not having updated my Patreon for so long. Rather than sounding like a broken record though I'm just going to skip straight to the content and catch you up. This time around, since there's so much I could talk about I'm going to split my update into different weekly posts scheduled throughout the near future. This seems like it might work better for my kind of content as well since Patreon will on...

And now I'm off to France.

Dear Patrons,

It’s the season of travels once again. It was around this time last year that I returned from my study trip to Korea. Back then the goal was to up my level of animation, and I think that was certainly achieved although there’s still much to be done. This time around the journey goes to Valence France where I’ve been admitted to the La Poudriére "Animation TV Series Concept & Scriptwriting" course. It just became official this Friday, and I’m...

Dear Patreons,

We have arrived well into 2018. I hope that you’ve all had a great January and are making your way nicely through the winter months. It might have just been for a brief moment, but the other day the sun was shining and it felt like spring was approaching. That should be a good sign of things to come.

With a month having passed since last writing I’d like to go over a few points in this Patreon update. I’ll start with some news and then furth...

2017 - Another Year Gone by.

Dear Patreons,

I hope you have all had some happy holidays. I certainly have - it's been nice being back with the remaining family. I wanted to make a summary of the year and found that the video format suited the thought better. Looking back at the year I guess I've been up to more stuff than I thought, and it's been fun for the most part. I look forward to 2018 as it looks like it too has some interesting things in store.

I say so in the video as well, but I want to thank ...

More animations for Tales of Zale!

Dear Patreons,

hope you're all well! Attached you will find a sequence of shots that I've been working on since my last post. I have also included the animatic counterparts to the shots for a little look into the process.

Since last time I've also been working on revamping my website, since the time is nearing when we have to send out our applications for internships. I'm designing it in Adobe Muse, which has been a lot of fun to work with so far. It's still very much a work in pr...

Tales of Zale Production Trailer

Dear Patreons,

Things are going steadily forward as usual. I've recently upped my animation progress speed and hope to keep it going till Christmas. In case you're interested in a further view behind the scenes I've put together a little "production trailer" to show some of the progress being made on episode 3.

For the past couple of weeks I've been animating and fixing up a few more scenes for the animatic. I've also been trying to enlist the help of some other animators. I've go...

Getting Back to Tales of Zale

Dear Patreons,

Attached are some shots from a scene from Tales of Zale I've had the chance to work on for the past week or so. What really gave me a boost was that I got back some rough shots from a classmate of mine, Poul Niclasen whom I'd "typecast" for some animation on Bruhn the buffalo in the upcoming episode. After having cleaned up one of those shots I just couldn't stop myself, as you can see above.

I've been wanting to get back to Tales of Zale for a while, and I think I'...

Today I'd like to share with you some storyboards I've been working on for a certain project for the past couple of weeks. Right now the boarding is still in such an early stage that I feel comfortable sharing the WIP without spoiling too much, however from here on out that may not be the case anymore.

Still the storyboarding is taking up most of my spare time at the moment, so in the case that I'm unable to share them I may move the Patreon posts to become mo...

A festival week in review.

Dear Patreons,
I apologize for the one-week gap in posts. Things got quite hectic with the onset of the annual animation festival here in Viborg.
I was at it from dawn till dusk! Well, for the first 3 days I was back in Copenhagen for my mom's 50th birthday. We had somewhere between 50-100 guests and I was the only one around able to help out with hosting them all.

Then I came back and was part of a creative media conference, talking about games media and the Danish and Japane...

Tips & Tricks: Animated Action Scene

Dear Patreons,

I hope you're all well! Today I wanted to share some of my progress and thoughts about a recently finished action animation I made. Unfortunately I'm in a bus on my way to Copenhagen right now, and forgot to bring my WIP files. So rather than showing the process I thought I'd try out something new by talking more about the research that went on behind the scenes and share some of my findings. Next week I'll then follow up with some more of the visual material and storyboa...

Animated commercial, "Waiting Room"

Dear Patreons,

Another little addition to the weekly update. It happened recently that the commercial project that I had participated in producing at The Animation Workshop came out on Plastic Change's sites.
