It was fortuitous to get Kru Ham in the Library. Thailand is really like this, there are legends and fighters of great accomplishment everywhere, and a huge part of the Library is trying to archive and preserve as much of this as possible. Sometimes sessions just happen. I was waiting outside of a local stadium in Pattaya, swarms of audience members creating a kind of human current at a short distance from where I was sitting, when I spotted one of the referees from the ring skirting around t...

This is a specific example of a more general issue that many of us might be facing in how we train. It's especially the case in Thailand, where our trainers/padmen often come from a great deal of experience as fighters, which means that they have built-in habits of their own that may actually become more of an issue the better you get. I've had my trainer, Kru Nu, for nearly 6 years now. He's tall and long, and his style is very keen to snuff out an oncoming opponent. My style is bei...

Kru Pot is a wonderful teacher. At the end of our session, Kevin had him just shadow for a couple minutes for the "Slow Motion Capture" project we're doing, and just watching his knees in shadow thrilled me. In fact, it's what he'd started out with on his corrections, this focus on balance and power. Yodkhunpon makes a big deal about this as well: if you can throw your knees in shadow, you can throw them in a fight. Likewise, if you're off-balance in shadow, you can't throw anything in a figh...

Kru Ali is a very particular kind of man. He reminds me of Master K, my first Thai teacher, who when I met him was on the edge of turning 70 years old and was teaching students 1-1 out of the basement of his home in New Jersey, which he'd converted into a gym. Kru Ali's "basement" is a small gym, perched on the edge of a cliff that overlooks one of the most beautiful vistas of the Phuket water that I can imagine. Kevin noted a stone staircase that led from the house (which is actually under t...

My technique vlogs are real world updates on things I'm working on as a fighter. They aren't demos. Instead I'm sharing with you things I find interesting, often things I've learned from legends and great krus in the Library, and then have taken into my own practice. Maybe you'll find them interesting too! Above are my thoughts about rising on techniques.
You can see the rise I'm talking about in this slow motion of Karuhat's kick:

Kru Diesel is responsible for some of the biggest names in Bangkok National Stadia, most notably Petboonchu and Yothin. He is a renowned trainer of Muay Khao and the F.A. Group gym has for many years now been a destination for westerners hoping to focus on clinch in Thailand. For me, as not only a practitioner of knee fightin...

Because Lakhin's English is so good, and describes his style a great deal, I've also made a version of the session (above) without my commentary, with the raw mic feed turned up, so you can listen directly to him. This way you can study the session in two different ways, my commentary version, and the straight audio. A podcast version will be up soon too!

Because there is a lot of English spoken in this session I've also posted a commentary-free version of the session with just straight audio from the session: watch that here, so you can hear much more directly what Lakhin is saying. There will also be a podcast version posted soon. In cases like this, with proficient English spoken by the Kru, more versions aid in study.<...

My technique vlogs for my patrons are in depth conversations on things I'm working on, mostly techniques that I've learned from legends and krus in the Library. This one developed out of the work Arjan Gimyu (78 years of age) has been doing with me at Petchrungruang. We're in the process of adding him to the Library, he's one of the great krus of the Golden Age, head trainer of Kaensak Sor Ploenjit, 2x Fighter of the Year (who is in the Library), and my own Kru, Pi Nu. This work developed out...

Kru Tak is one of these incredibly difficult fighters to stand in front of. He's constantly slipping and tagging and annoying you. I remember Joe "Hongthongnoi," who is himself a Muay Khao fighter, saying that the job of a Femeu fighter is to "annoy." Indeed. But that kind of skill re...
