Napapol Giatsakchokchai - Powerful Boxing For Muay Thai (81 min)

Patrons can listen to this session also as a podcast, along with our thoughts here.

Napapol is one of the "4 Lions of Thailand," a group of Western Boxing champions, which included Weerapol and Yodsanan as well. He came from Muay Thai and has a solid foundation from which he's able to teach, but like Chatchai Sasakul, his biggest career successes were Western Boxing. I ...

Training the Knockout - Sugar Ray and Hippy Singmanee

(video above) I feel loose, but explosive. My weight shifts forward and back without hesitation, there are a few gaps in the fluidity of movement, the way an engine might get an air bubble and hiccup, but I feel good. My fists, knees, and shins are making nice popping sounds against the leather teardrop bag and my eyes keep glancing up at the ring, where I can steal instruction offered to other fighters and students while they're on pads. Kevin is sitting on the couch just a short distance fr...

Sylvie's Technique Vlog - All About How I Recover (12 min)

Lots of people ask me how I can fight so often, for so long, and my approach is pretty simple. I feel like I'm Saitama One Punch Man telling about my sit ups and push ups. But it's mostly a combination of continuous movement, developing pain tolerance, heat, hangs and squats. You train to be injured so injury isn't an obstacle. It's part of everything I do. I start out talking about today's recovery from a pretty good leg bashing I took last night, and then go into other things I regularly do...

Muay Thai Bones Podcast - #10 (for iTunes) Losing Sweetness, "Easy Fight" Sabotage

Welcome to Episode 10 of Muay Thai Bones. Lots of deep level discussion of Muay Thai, see below all the topics covered. This podcast was cut a little short of our usual super long format due to some technical difficulties (we're still getting the hand of this!), we talked for another hour and a half! But what we did capture is still really enjoyable. Thank you for supporting our exploration into this format.

Kru Mou Ban Muay Thai - The Art of Counters (73 min)

Kevin and I rolled slowly down ever-narrowing streets, looking for Kru Mou's house, where he teaches Muay Thai to his students. We got to a bend that we weren't entirely sure we could fit down in the rental car, so I got out and walked, following the little blue dot on my GPS as it crawled toward the destination we had pinned on the map. Sometimes you'll hear the whack whack of pads being kicked, letting you know where a gym is. But my best guess in this case was just a large, wide g...

Sylvie's Technique Vlog - Creating Power and Distance At Close Range (9 min)

This is what I've been working on lately. As many of you know Dieselnoi, the King of Knees, has been at my gym Petchrungruang weekly, advising and mentoring everyone. He's there through my patron support through a project we are calling Legends in Residence. One of the awesome things of having him there is that I'm getting even more on his program, and part of that program is this very particular trick he has for creating power at very close distance, just by changing the angle of the step ba...

Sagat Petchyindee Library Coffee Podcast #2 (for iTunes)

Above is the podcast version of the full Sagat Petchyindee Session 3 Muay Thai Library in audio form, as well as a 30 minute introduction podcast, what we are calling Library Coffee. Library Coffee is me and Kevin just sitting down fresh after I have filmed, or recorded my commentary, and drawing out the big ideas behind what is captured in the documentation. Putting them together in one podcast we hope allows patrons to thinking about the Library on the move, when you don't always have time ...

Sylvie's Technique Vlog - Where Are Your Feet? Foot Position (9 min)

This is something I've been thinking a lot about lately, and working on, maybe you'll find it something you want to look into improving too. It started to become a big focus after my session with Namsaknoi (linked below), and then came into greater focus when training with Arjan Net, and with Dieselnoi in my gym right now.

These are Muay Thai Library sessions which illustrate the importance of foot position, if you'd like to dive into this:

The Weight of Sadness - Tongchai and Kru Nu (Patreon Magazine)

Bank, or Tongchai as he's called when he's fighting, stepped over the ropes into the ring and the blue satin robe around him slithered in after him. His gaze was on the floor, but his eyes didn't seem to register anything. He was lost inside himself; the fabric against his skin might as well have been on the rafters for how deep inside himself he was, even as he smiled at the referee who was checking his gloves. I looked to my left, where Kru Nu was standing, watching his son enter the ring t...

Arjan Net Library Coffee Podcast #1 (for iTunes)

We've always wanted to make an audio version of new Muay Thai Library sessions because we know that sitting down to watch for an hour every two weeks is sometimes more than that a schedule can handle. We put up a few audio tracks on soundcloud a while back and lots of people wrote to say how much they loved listening to them on the way to the gym to get excited for their work out, or on the way to work. But we wanted to do more than that.

Sylvie's Technique Vlog - Influencing the Referee and Judging (9 min)

This technique vlog is all about the small things we practice in training that end up playing out in fights, in particular how dominance in the ring has a performed component. The inspiration of the vlog was the legend Dieselnoi telling our Lumpinee fighter that he made an error in backing up after he had knocked down his opponent, and not forcing a count. If he had been counted many felt the fight would have been won. Fights can be decided on such small things. It caused me to think about al...

Lots of patrons have asked that we add past Muay Thai Bones podcasts to iTunes, exclusive for Patreon supporters, so we're doing that little by little. This is episode #5. Keep in mind as we go back in time audio quality may start to vary as we have been experimenting with and improving the tech along the way. Kru Cha - Cohesion, Guard and Strikes Together (62 min)

One of the great things about the Muay Thai Library, for me, is that it's an endeavor to preserve and archive the Muay of Thailand in all its variety. Golden Age Legends and great fighters of now are obvious gems, but you can find some truly incredible Muay Thai among the trainers who work, day in and day out, shaping the fighters of the next generation. Kru Cha is such a gem. He reminded me a bit of Kru San (Sitmonchai) - who is in the Library, the session is linked below -, in that he's a b...

Sylvie's Technique Vlog - Evolving in the Long Guard (10 min)

Here is my technique vlog on my continual development in the Muay Thai Long Guard, a really important defensive position that you don't really hold, but use in conjunction with other guards and strikes. You want to build balance and contextual feeling with this guard, and that's what I'm focusing on right now.

Kru Gai - Proper Dern and the Impossible Trip (63 min)

There are many wonderful things in this session, several of them unique. For one, this is the first session I've produced highlighting a regular trainer from my own gym in Pattaya, Petchrungruang. Secondly, Kru Kai is one of the best Muay Khao padmen I've seen in all my travels across Thailand, so we get to look into what makes great Muay Khao padwork, what I'm calling proper dern. And, he's of a group of Muay Thai krus that may be relatively unknown, not "superstars" of another age, but ...

Lumpinee and One Day Fighting There - A Story (Patreon Magazine)

We're at Lumpinee Stadium. Bank is tipping his head forward, his gaze on the floor, as he listens to Dieselnoi's instructions on how he should approach his fight. Bank is "on deck," sitting next to trainers and cornermen from our gym, waiting for the fight before him to finish before entering the ring. He's shrouded in a royal blue cape, made of a kind of shiny satin material that is always too hot. With the Thai Oil and Vaseline all over your body, you feel beads of sweat run down your chest...

Dieselnoi at Petchrungruang Long Term - Legends in Residence

We had Dieselnoi come to Petchrungruang for a month between February and March. The idea was to take this absolutely incredible man, a tower from the Golden Age of Muay Thai and a pillar of the Muay Thai community in Thailand, who is more or less a satellite to the core of contemporary Muay Thai gyms. Dieselnoi has connections everywhere - I doubt there's a single city in Thailand where he couldn't find a friend who would host him. But his teaching is detached from the kind of practice he gre...

Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtorn - Sharking The Angles | 67 min

Many of you have asked for this, now all of you have it: Namsaknoi is in the Muay Thai Library. He's a very charming person, playful but damn... when you feel him shift from his evasiveness to his "I'm just going to stand right here," you don't feel like he's so nice anymore. When I explained to him what the Library is, and that we want to capture his style, he just nodded thoughtfully and said, "okay, we'll spar and clinch." Perfect. His style comes out in everything he does. And he's able t...

Legacy Projects: Documenting 3 Student Weeks with General Tunwakom

The driving force behind training with the best fighters, legends, and krus from all over Thailand is this understanding that something is being lost from the Muay Thai of Thailand. It's a documentary project more than a collection of cool moves. There is a legacy of Muay Thai, of techniques and pedagogies, and of characters and personalities that will disappear over time and it's our mission to preserve as much as we can. In some cases, there is a sense of urgency to that documentation.
