Dan's Choice - The Bartender

From EGSNP's Parable

Are those barrels of exposition? I bet they're barrels of exposition. Break them to learn how crafting works.

My apologies for messing up early access on the previous milestone image! Patreon used to ask you to select a minimum tier, and bam, you were set. More recently, if something is tier-locked, you have to select EV...

"Also, chicken wings!"

Commentary

If I had to justify Susan agreeing to this (and I do, someone's bound to comment), this is another cut scene scenario. Susan began a conversation with the wrong NPC and inadvertently started a mini-game.

There is bartender mini-game in Fable 2, and I think it was just pressing a button at the right time to slide a drink? I'm not sure. I didn't care for it, much. Maybe it was more "realistic" than finding loot on eve...

Workout Parable Susan

Susan didn't know if she actually needed to maintain her fitness in any way that didn't involve experience points and potions while in the game world, but she thought it might be a fun experience to do some heavy lifting either way.

This was voted on before Parable Susan went all "evil", but I figured plenty of people would also want to see evil Susan in color and working out, so I made an alternative version of it.

Image reuse?! I would never do such a thing! HOW DARE YOU

In all seriousness, it's something I should do more often when it makes sense to. It often doesn't work, but when it does, well... I has loooooots of comics to make o_o;

In any case, YES, SUSAN, THAT WAS A LAPSE IN JUDGEMENT.

Commentary

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

What? I'm allowed to get hyped about these two going on a first date in a non-canon scenario.

I'm not sure carriage-wrecks would really be a thing. I mean, surely they could happen, but as far as "with great enough frequency to used as an example in a sentence" is concerned, I'm sort of thinking not realistically? Maybe I'm underestimating the frequency of carriage-wrecks.

Does anyone instantly like alcohol on their first try?

I know I didn't. Still don't. I only sorta like it when it's lime-flavored? I've also sort of enjoyed honey-flavored, but I'd have it "on the rocks", by which I mean I would drown it in ice.

Oh, and, um... Yes, this is totally still being a parody, because you can drink in games, and then weird stuff happens, and it's like "why did I do this".

Yes.

It's probably for the best that Catalina is not an alchemist.

Commentary

This is a pretty chill, down-to-earth moment, but we can have those, right? Right?!

Look, if this is too mundane to you, just focus on how ridiculous Catalina's hair is for a bit, alright? Just stare at it for a bit and remember that everything is still ridiculous.

As for what they're talking about, I've been explained the SCIENCE! before, but ultimately all my memory seems ...

Commentary

A WILD CATALINA APPEARS!

It is of no importance whatsoever to the plot, but in my mind, that bartender has gotten into fights with bandits, and that scar on her left arm is from blocking a blade with her left arm, which was immediately followed by punching out the bandit with her right arm.

I have nothing so specific regarding the scars on her scalp an...

Commentary

I really need to start splitting this thing into parts (if you're from the future and it looks like I have done, HOORAY! I DID THE THING!).

Case in point, this is the start of a part in which we take a break from the main plot, and even Susan, for a bit to see Rhoda go do... Something? Who knows what!

I mean, I do. I've written a lot of it. I had taken Wednesday off in part because I'd been so preoccupied with other things the week prior that I ...

Though Parable 64 was groundbreaking, its controls would be considered alarmingly awkward years later.

Commentary

Panel two is partially inspired by The Witcher (books in particular), and people knowing about the main character Geralt by virtue of bard-sung word-of-mouth.

Bard-sung word-of-mouth that was often more concerned with weaving a crowd-pleaser than an accurate retelling of what happened, so really, who knows what liberties Bard-Ellen has taken. Whatever ...

Commentary

I feel this might be a little too true to real life when compared to the recruitment strategies for any number of things.

I hope the lurking in the bushes part is hyperbole, at least, but I can't be certain.

I wasn't sure what Rhoda should be wearing, and then I thought about Susan in the past couple of comics, and decided "yep, that's where this outfit went."

Granted, that doesn't c...

She's not getting a great review score from this guy.

Commentary

It's rather brave and ill-advised of him to wave his pointer finger around like that while deliberately not looking at Susan.

I wasn't sure about this strip while in the middle of writing it, as I felt it could be taken as given that this guy wouldn't be happy with Susan for these exact reasons, and that Susan's defense was little more than a recap.

Then that last sentence came to mind.

Who To Make Identical Survey

Related to this poll. I plot at least one end of month poll related to such nonsense, and I'm curious who should be volunteered for it.

Please "like" suggestions you agree with, though I know Patreon was having issues with "likes" recently for some people. Replying with approval is another way to show your, well, approval.

If the poll winds up involving "fusion" forms, it will most likely...

Commentary

I mostly just wanted to draw the faces in the first two panels. Panel three is lovely and all, but I would have had her drink any potion I could think of an excuse for just to make panel two happen.

I was just going to have him say "ack" in panel three before I realized the poses I'd given him made it look like he'd moved closer beforehand, so I tried to imply he was moving closer to try and grab th...

Identical Form Transformation Poll

If two characters were to windup looking identical via transformation, what options sound appealing to you?

This is, of course, generally speaking. Specifics will always matter.

Commentary

This will, of course, take at least twelve comics.

I wasn't going to bother having Rhoda realize her own cutscene blunder, but then I realized I could get to paraphrase the movie Chinatown.

For the sake of this comic, I prefer the "we're going to need another monk" approach. If this were an actual video game, I would have the ritual not being performed in time be a conse...

Parable, Parable comic, Parables are the champions...!

Commentary

I debated whether to make a joke about stored equipment, the implication being that Rhoda was just carrying a giant hammer around much like Susan somehow carried all of her potions and such around, or what's seen above.

I decided "hammer space" would confuse what I was going for with the invisible inventory without pockets option.

Also, I really like the mental image of these...

This is not what happens in Fable 2, but there's a lot in common. In that game, the hero of... Swole? Probably strength, but let's go with swole. The hero of swole isn't happy with their life of pacifism, bad guys show up and do a very bad thing, and sh...

This guy is loosely based on a generic "big bad" fantasy character I came up with when I was much, much younger. There was basically nothing to him beyond being an evil necromancer and using a very poorly drawn Scythe as a weapon (it was essentially a staff with a scythe blade).

Commentary

"Off-panel fields and farms" is not said in error. Those are not "just-off-panel". Those are in the distance off-panel. From that location, however, the livestock are "just-off-panel", though this does get confusing, because if the farms and fields themselves are off-panel, one would, logically, never actually be near enough to them for the cows to be "just-o...
