Harvest of Useful Idiots
Added 2016-08-06 07:22:16 +0000 UTCI wrote a short story called “Harvest of Useful Idiots” that might result in a really great animation, or it could be awful. It’s hard to tell at this stage. I like the story, but it’s four full pages of narration (think around 12 minutes of YouTube real estate), and I’m very afraid of it dragging for some people in its video form. The payoff could be well worth the pace, however, as the end is strong and unexpected. The internet is fickle, though. This isn’t some movie, where you buy a ticket and have a seat. This is a place where I’m gone with a click if I fail to maintain someone’s attention.
This animation would be an artistic science fiction allegory, covering the abuse of politics, religion, and human nature. Serious stuff. A potential problem I see is that it will take the viewer right up until the very end before they’ll realize where I’m going with this. “Get to the point already,” they’ll say, “what the hell is this?” If they manage to make it to the end, however, then they’ll understand - and if they do make it that far, I think the message will resonate, though it is quite dark.
Those concerns could just be my imagination; it might maintain interest throughout. I’ll send the story to some brutally honest people and let you know. Also, if it survives them, I’ll know even more after doing some work on the art. If I can make this really interesting to look at, it’ll help carry the story to the payoff. That's where your input will be considered during this process. Hopefully, we'll converse again when I have some images. If the art doesn't work out, and I decide to forgo the animation, I'll still upload the story here for you to read at your leisure.
