History Summarized: Ireland

Comments

Definitely look at the history from an Irish creator, there is a tendency in the US to carry old and simplified versions of conflicts into the modern day without any of the nuance or complexity - Irish Americans tend to wear it as a badge of identity and I get why to an extent, but it can cloud things a bit. What happened in the 30s was the change from the Free State - Ireland left what is now the Commonwealth in 31, changed the constitution in 37 to become Ireland and the Republic of Ireland act in 1948 finalised it as a fully independent Republic. So you’re both right

You should look into the Irish Civil War too

One of my first university modules for my history degree was ‘the Irish in York’ - what’s often overlooked is how many Irish came to England around the time of the famine. And in my final year I did a module on the United Irishmen

Some of my ancestors moved from Ireland to England during the Potato Famine. It was a complete surprise when I was doing my family tree

Interesting video - 💯 goes fairly basic on detail as you’ve said (e.g. the pre/post home rule/split of Ireland). Like many things many elements are interpreted differently from the different tribal perspectives here. As such would be remiss of me not to flag if you did go down this “rabbit hole” further you’ll likely end up with some very “tribal views” manifesting in comments for you (particularly on YouTube!) Some people will go a mile out of their way to take offence at something!
