Hey guys! So last month when I went on my trip through Northern Japan I became good friends with one of the other girls on the trip (Yan, she's from Australia!) and she was staying in Japan for a couple extra days after our trip finished so we spent some time together :) She really wanted to check out this Hedgehog Cafe in Harajuku so I looked it up and after reading their website it seemed like they treated the hedgehogs really well so we decided to go!
If you don't know anything about hedgehogs (like me) then they seem to be well taken care of. The hedgehogs are in clean (but small) containers and they're well-fed and look healthy. The cafe is open from 12:00-8:00pm and the staff told me the hedgehogs are transferred to larger cages after the cafe closes that have exercise wheels and a place to sleep. It seemed great but after I came home I read up some more info about hedgehogs and it seems like they like to be alone, and they don't like bright lights so they should have some place they can hide away from the light. Also feeding them too many mealworms isn't good for their health.
So I decided not to post this video publicly because I don't feel right to advertise a place that isn't treating the animals properly. But since I filmed and edited it I thought I would just post it here so you can see the cute hedgehogs anyways. I hope they aren't too stressed out being in these conditions and are getting enough time away from people... Since I don't know much about hedgehogs I can't tell from their behaviour ><
Do any of you own a hedgehog or know anything about them? Do you think these conditions are really bad for them or not? Would love to learn some more about them.
