Can a fella get his fruity drink on?

7/24/25

This joke started off with just the concept of a full size umbrella being used in a giant drink, nothing especially creative or spectacular. But I wanted to present it in a way which added to the simple joke, with a giant ogre ordering the drink, and the setting of the premise happening in this medieval fantasy tavern. I think little purple goblin guy really is what ties it all together.

It's a great question! And something which is a personal challenge for me. Even your comment here has me looking twice at the way I featured the glass in this comic, and now I'm thinking it could probably use some added reflection. The simple and specific answer is that I work in layers digitally when I'm drawing, so I might draw a white highlight over the glass object, shaping it to the glass, (in this case a slight curve). Then I'll adjust the opacity as necessary, usually bring it down to like 60-80%. But first and formeost in my cartooning, not just in the case of glass/reflection, but with anything that seems challenging, I'll find a reference photo and roughly emulate what I see. This rule of thumb has helped me a lot in my drawing practice and adds a layer of realism to everything I'm drawing. Especially with the more wacky or unusual objects/poses.

This is like a weird, ultra-specific question, but what’s your approach to drawing glass/windows? In this one, it’s kinda simple and just straight transparent, but I’m sure in the past you’ve done some pretty wacky stuff with reflections and tints.
