Time for some payback

8/28/25

I like to occasionally lean into the Far Side comparisons when I come up with ideas involving cows. Also I have to say when I’m self reflecting on my work it really is kind of crazy how much more comfortable I am in laying out and coloring a complex scene. It would be interesting one day to look back at some of the comics I was making in year one where I was rushing through backgrounds, shading, small details etc. just to pick apart what I would do differently today. A bit of art advice I don’t hear very much, so I would like to impart it to you here: rushing through a piece to save some time actually comes at the cost of an eternally mid piece of artwork. I’ve learned this lesson a bunch, where I’ll rush through something because I’m over it or I don’t care how it looks, but then I look at it months later and I’m like “why didn’t I take more time with this?” So now, if there’s a building I’m sketching it out to actually look right. If there’s a sky I’m painting clouds. If someone is in the foreground, they’re getting shaded and detailed. It’s actually fun and much more satisfying on the tail end. (Pun intended hehe)

That feeling is so real!! Putting extra care into the work makes it all worthwhile. And in comics it can be such an effective way to put the reader in a space. The people long for depth!

I feel this post so much. I used to hate coloring and backgrounds and even drawing bodies so it'd just be a floating head in white space all of the time 😂 One day I just showed the whole scene care instead of just what I felt good at and it turned out so beautifully. The amount of pride that I had in comparison to the past was almost immeasurable I'm certain when it's your living or passion to share with others, it's hard getting those extra details in when you're pressured to just get stuff out there. After your post especially, I'm more appreciative of what you add to ensure max entertainment for us and thank you for that reminder about art!
