Call for Questions! (November 2018 Patron Show)

Hey folks,

Long week for us here at Noclip.

On Monday I traveled to New York to interview Robert Yang (above) about his work on Black Mesa and beyond. On Tuesday we had our Extra Life stream which raised over $8,000. I've done a solid 3 days of editing on Project Mesa which is coming together really well. Jeremy was filming a secret project you'll find out about next month and I'm prepping the studio to interview three of the team from Project Borealis tomorrow. No rest for the wicked!

In the meantime we're gonna have a Patron Show next week with early cuts of Project Mesa and a bunch more - including our world famous Patron Q&A.

So if you have questions about all our work (my god we have so much stuff that is almost finished) and our plans for 2019 (we have a lot set up already) stick them in the comments below and I'll answer as many as possible in next week's show.

Talk then!

Danny

Call for Questions! (November 2018 Patron Show)

Ah, I missed this during our Q&A recording this week sorry. I think I learned to complete work while I was still interested in it while working at GameSpot. The key it to get through the boring work as quickly as possible. 80/20 rule that stuff, so that at the end you can add some TLC if you want to, but aren't overburdened by the project. Once you've lost enthusiasm it's a waste because you're not only wasting time on that project but stopping work on possible other projects you might have been doing afterwards. So either power through and get that shit done, or drop it. But don't do neither! Hope this helps!

As noclip broadens its reach with non-Danny docs, and juggling multiple projects at once, how do you approach project management? Keeping docs on track for deadline, organizing data, and handling notes, etc. Also, any good resources for youtube transcriptions?

Brandt Hughes

Hey Mate, Have to say you're doing a great job keeping the community involved & up to date especially considering you have a newborn (once again huge congrats mate). So for my question I'm eagerly awaiting the last of the Bethesda docs but how do you feel about doing similar multiple documentaries with other studios in the future? More of a one off, comes as it comes or something you intend on doing on the future? And lastly I loved your interview with my fellow Aussie Mick Gordon, do you foresee doing more of these I guess you could say niche interviews with composers? And maybe even other 'niche' interviews with parts of game development like voice actors, concept artists, etc. Anyway keep up the good work mate with all you have on your plate you're doing stellar.

Isn't it: cheese melt - sliced bread with cheese on it that you toast in a oven / toaster oven grilled cheese - sandwich with cheese on it that you pan fry to toast it cheese toasty - sandwich with cheese on it that you toast on a sandwich / panini press

I hope it's not too off topic but I'd like to know if there are any plans to do documentaries on games from the 4X genre. I'm a huge fan of the Endless series of 4X game such as Endless Legend and Endless Space 2 made by Amplitude Studios. I suppose these games fall under more obscurity as they aren't mainstream titles, so are games like these within noclip's sights? Additionally, what smaller titles would noclip do in the future? For instance, I enjoy FTL and Into the Breach made by subset games. I would imagine these to be more renown titles, but does that give them merit for a documentary?

Hey, Danny! After Alanah's awesome Dream Daddy doc and with Esteban's doc coming out soon, are there any current plans or projects in talks with other guest hosts?

Nicholas Decker

Hey there Danny and the Noclip team, In regards to your editing work, have any of you ever had an in-progress project get put on the mental back-burner for so long you lose all creative passion for it? I’m curious as to your advice for overcoming those hurdles of completing work despite your fire for it being lost. Thanks for the inspiration you all consistently provide and your willingness to share your insights along the way via the Production Classes and Q&A’s like this. Much love from Oklahoma City, Luke

What do you do to stay sane? With as busy as you are, what do you do for fun or relaxation when the work day is over? Keep killing it Danny, your work is unrivaled in quality and storytelling!

Tory Thompson

Thanks for the update. So pumped for Project Mesa. Question: how has life at work been with a newborn daughter now in your life? How are you adjusting? My little girl is 2 weeks old now, so my equivalent to your Bloodborne over paternity was Stardew Valley on Switch, and it's been tiring but fun. Cheers Danny Dad!

Hey Danny! Happy to see everything is going so well and NoClip has many things coming both pretty soon and further down the line. My question is regarding Project Mesa, with it being one of the most imminent docs. I'm sure you'll cover a lot during this video, but I was wondering about the logistics: How many people in total did you interview? How many cities did you go to? With how editing is currently going, what is the estimated length you're shooting for? Thanks for taking my questions and providing any other similar details and have a fantastic day!

Brandon K Gann

Hi Danny, great to see the patreon show back - also enjoying how updated you are keeping us on all the goings on at noclip these days! Just helps show how busy you are and how worth it investing has been! I have a couple of questions - do you have any thoughts on Fallout 76's reception so far? I really enjoyed the NoClip Sessions you filmed at GDC - is there a chance these may return in 2019?

Christopher Kelly

Loved Bonus level! Will another episode come out before the year ends?

Shell Comics

Hi Danny, with Project Mesa being made and coming up, would there be any other big retrospectives you'd like to do? (Whether or not the devs are involved)

Steve Fiori

A couple quick questions. Will the no clip podcast be making a return any time soon? Can we expect more bonus levels in between the larger projects? Finally, do you call toasted bread with melted cheese a cheese melt, grilled cheese, or cheese toasty? Keep being awesome.

Hey Danny, do you hope that docs can interest people who not just gamers and perhaps don’t have much of an understanding of how much work actually goes into creating a video game? Also, my other half loves your cat.

Hey! I'd love to know, what sort of questions do you start with when conducting interviews to get your interviewee warmed up? Are they relevent to the topic and do the answers often make it into the final cuts of the docs? :D
