Understanding

- At egscomics

I wasn't sure what to put here to promote the comic, and had a thought: I have NO idea why we call "understanding" understanding.

We're under a stand? Standing under something? Under... Comprehension???

Commentary

- Pat on the head

I imagine the discovery that Rhoda likes being pat on the head involved Diane doing it once without thinking, catching herself, apologizing, and Rhoda sheepishly encouraging it.

TO BE CLEAR, however, Rhoda won't accept them from just anyone. She has to know and trust a person. I'm not sure what all instructions one should follow when petting a dog or a cat are applicable to Rhoda, but surely some of them are.

Under once also meant in the middle of, among. So, you're standing in the midst of something, you're in the presence of it, so you're fully immersed in the subject, and you have knowledge of it. Danish uses a similar word, where other German languages use word compounds meaning "stand before." Meanwhile, other Indo-European languages usually have a word that means something like put together, or take apart. We also have a word like that: Comprehend (com, meaning with, together, and prehendere, meaning to take, to sieze). Understand?
