Variable Optics (Zoom Level) WIP
Added 2024-11-08 19:42:31 +0000 UTCHi!
Here's one work-in-progress video clip of those variable optics and zoom levels which are part of that Patch 2.
Basically I have the core functionality implemented, but there's still few areas that are going to need some consideration:
Reticle behavior when zooming?
Instant (one scroll step) or linear (multiple scroll steps) zooming?
Option to choose between instant or linear through demo settings?
Dynamic scope / mouse sensitivity related to zoom level?
I will have this feature most likely completed this weekend and I will then share more video clips.
ps. While implementing this, I also found one bug that caused the optic oculars to remain black even I fixed the main issue for that in Patch 1.

Cause if you make one optic a lot better than the others then there will be no point in using the other optics. A good example of that is surprising Minecraft - elytra is a superior form of transportation and makes a lot of others completely obsolete. Even in single player games you gotta create balance to make the player choose. There can never be the perfect option because that makes the gameplay boring and straightforward.

2024-11-13 21:43:41 +0000 UTCNot sure if you talked about this but would it be possible to add picture in picture scopes? I dont usually suffer with motion sickness but the rapid zoom in and out is making me a bit nauseous

2024-11-11 09:28:47 +0000 UTCMake it linear to balance LPVOs out. If people can install switch between magnification it’s gonna create a META. Also please make some sort of an animation for them. This can be done by first letting the player choose the zoom and then the animation playing. This is good to make every optic a viable choice and not make the LPVO a META item. Please I don’t want tarkov balancing in this game.

2024-11-09 01:18:34 +0000 UTCThat constant blur effect is there because this post is titled WIP, meaning the feature isn't ready yet, this was just showcasing the current progress for Patreon. The peripheral blur will blend in at somewhere middle point naturally (already implemented 1h ago) and like mentioned in the post, reticle (includes "vignette" eye relief box) behavior is one of those things that I will look at this weekend, meaning how I'm going to blend that with zooming somewhat naturally :)

2024-11-09 01:12:34 +0000 UTCI have to say, I kind of don't like this as a massive fan of LPVO's. To me the whole point of one is that I get the versatility of non-magnified and magnified optics with some slight drawbacks, but if my peripheral vision is going to be that blurred at 1x, it introduces a massive drawback. The vignetting is also exaggerrated at 1x, the sight picture has no reason being that dark since the VUDU at least has excellent transmission. I would personally like it so that the actual view of the sight on screen stays the same size all the way, and the FOV and blur would change as you zoom. It would also be less disorientating that way. Just my two cents.

2024-11-09 01:07:01 +0000 UTCThis looks great! I was speaking with a buddy about variable zoom in IRL optics and how it is handled. He shared a pretty great YouTube video covering first and second focal planes. It sounds like on an optic like that, the reticle itself would remain the same size but everything around it would magnify. Then there are other optics that do zoom their reticle along with the optic’s zoom. Loving each of these updates ❤️

2024-11-08 22:39:44 +0000 UTCPlease add an option to make all reticles, scopes, iron sights, etc. to be the same sensitivity as the general looking around sensitivity. Personally I hate having to adjust every individual slider for each zoom level in games. Being able to do both is good. But I hope it’s not “one or the other”
