This year I went to the SF Zine Fest and the East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Fest. Though I’ve been interested in zines for a while, the idea for a Hit Points Lovecraft zine combined with just seeing a bunch of what the medium has to offer in my area got me inspired to more seriously try making my own. I like how they’re ephemeral and a bit punk rock, an...

Okay. So. The new pledge levels for the monthly model are now up! I did a 1-month pause on my Patreon so that no one will get charged for December, meaning you can feel free to go ahead and sign up for whichever monthly tier works best of you. I don't want you to be annoyed at Patreon charging you too much if you don't update your pledge, so please go ahead and take care of that at your earliest convenience. And as always, thank you so much for your support! <3
Also, if you decide to go for...

The number of projects I have in progress at any given time is pretty ridiculous, and I find it helpful to periodically sit down and make a list of all of them. Normally I do that in a notebook, but the revamped Patreon seemed like a good place to do it publicly. Since it’s not just for myself this time, I’ve included descriptions of each one, which is why it took me a while to write all of this out.
Please feel free to ask questions and let me know which things here particularly interest ...

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but I want to restructure my Patreon into a monthly format that will hopefully produce more content and more engagement. I’m thinking of kicking this off in January, launching the new format at the start of 2019.
I’ve been doing about 2-4 games per year, but I’ve been slowing down as I’ve started doing longer and more ambitious games with more detailed settings. I want to open up my process, so a big part of the revamped Patreon will be shar...

Hey everyone! Thanks yet again for your support! I just launched The Dungeon Zone in PDF and POD on DriveThruRPG! If you'd like to get a POD copy at a discounted price of $12 (plus shipping), click this link to add it to your DTRPG cart:

I decided to go ahead and release The Dungeon Zone on Patreon, so there'll be a patrons-only post with the PDFs shortly. Since releasing POD and PDF simultaneously is supposedly better for sales, I'm waiting until the POD version is all sorted out before I do the actual commercial release, meaning that you'll have the game for probably a weeks or more before anyone else. Yay you!
TDZ has been a lot of fun to work on, and I hope you enjoy the many silly jokes, contrived referen...

I should really post here more often, huh? I’ve been really busy with stuff for the Twilight Tales Kickstarter, but it’s calming down now on my end. The books are out to backers, and there’s just a bit more stretch goal stuff to finish up. Of course, we’re also planning to do a Kickstarter for Dragon World (my Powered by the Apocalypse comedy anime fantasy RPG), so I expect to be insanely busy then too. (Also, there's a free "Dragon World Hack" version!) ...

Angel Project is finally done! It's taken longer than I'd have liked (as usual), but the game is ready. This is a reworking of the rules of Magical Fury for a lighter game about cute girls in power suits fighting the Darkness in the shiny future of 20XX.

Since I last posted an update, the people at Patreon came to their senses and decided not to implement the new payment structure that everyone hated, so for the time being I'm going to keep doing this Patreon thing.
I'm considering reworking my own Patreon setup a bit, because I've ended up making fewer, larger games, plus I'd like to figure out something that encourages more direct engagement with you guys, possibly switching to a monthly model where I share drafts as well as finished games w...

First off, in case you hadn't heard already, Patreon is changing how they charge fees, giving more to creators but charging more to patrons. It's a small amount per pledge, but it adds up quickly if you make a lot of small pledges. I'm going to be looking at this more carefully and figuring out what exactly I'm going to do about it, but I encourage you...

It's been a while since I last posted an update here, so let me take a little time to fill you in on what I've been up to.
Kickstarter Stuff
A big part of why I haven't been doing all that much Patreon type stuff is that we're gearing up for not one but two Kickstarters for Star Line Publishing. The first is for Twilight Tales, the first Japanese Golden Sky Stories supplement. ...

Welp. It's finally done. Over a year of work, 168 pages, over 200 graphical elements, and just shy of 64,000 words, Kagegami High is here. I've posted about it a bunch on my blog, but basically it's an anime schoolgirl version of Welcome to Night Vale by way of a variant of the Maid RPG rules. It's also the weirdest and most ambitious RPG setting I've ever done, presenting a surreal, isolated boarding school on a mysterious island, and the many inhabitants. There are LOTS of random tables. I mea...

Who ya gonna ask for a quote through their website?
I've made a good amount of posts about Spooktacular, but long story short it's an updated retroclone of the brilliant 1986 West End Games Ghostbusters RPG. I filed the serial numbers off and made what I hope will be some fun additions (playtesters certainly like using the Ghost Punchers to punch ghosts). It would be nice to be able to get a game like this out the door in time for Halloween, but that's a little too soon to get everythin...

Things have been kinda weird for me, but then they’re always kinda weird, so it feels redundant to say that. This time I’m coming off of a massive freelance localization job that largely monopolized my time for about 6 weeks, and involved a lot of 12-hour days. I did squeeze in a surprising amount of RPG writing all the same, and since it’s ended I’ve been sort of stuck in high gear. I’m also trying to get back on track with planning out a Kickstarter fo...

Last night the finalized artwork arrived, so I just finished putting together the PDF of Melancholy Kaiju! Kind of like with Raspberry Heaven, this is an idea I had ages ago that's finally coming to fruition, which is pretty great. (Unlike Raspberry Heaven I didn't have a trail of failed attempts at designing the game.) Anyway, I'll be sending the PDF out to patrons at the appropriate levels momentarily. Enjoy!

It looks like it's worked out that the next game I'll be putting out is Melancholy Kaiju. I've been blathering about it a lot, but it's a game about giant monsters who are kinda sad trying to make their way in everyday life. I came up with the title ages ago, inspired by designer vinyl toys I'd seen in places like the Super 7 shop in San Francisco, but it was relatively recently that I figured out what kind of ...

Thanks to a blog comment by a patron (who goes by JacuzziAnt), I realized that if I want this Patreon page to be more of a conversation and less of you guys passively letting me have a little bit of your money, I should make more of an effort to talk about what I’m doing and generally give us more of a starting point for a discussion and maybe some insight into my process. I’ve been blathering about stuff online for a decade or so now, so it’s not like that isn’t...

With the arrival of the proof from DriveThruCards it looks like America's Next Top Reality Show is ready to go out into the world!
I wrote about it at length in my last Patreon update, but ANTRS is a game of the same family as Channel A, but a smaller and generally more subversive game. It puts you in the role if a TV executive trying to come up with the next big reality show to cynically pander to a particular demographic. The result is similar to Channel A, except th...

Hey guys. I wanted to update you all on what I've been up to.
The other day I got inspired to make a push to finish America's Next Top Reality Show, so it will most likely be my next Patreon release, hopefully some time this month. It's a party card game I've been working on for a while, part of my "word salad" game family that I started with Channel A. I wanted to make a game that was a bit mo...

Raspberry Heaven is finally here! This is a game that I’ve been trying to make off and on since 2007, which means in all it took me 8 years to finally get it right. The good news is that I started a new day job, albeit a 6-month contract, which is doing a lot to fix my financial woes. But OTOH it means that I'm in a period of adjustment and I don't have nearly as much time to dedicate to working on games as I'd like. Right now Raspberry Heaven is pretty much just waiting on artwork, and I have a few other games that need playtesting. So I'm hoping my next paid Patreon release will be along before too long, but I can't really say when exact...

It took a lot longer than I'd planned (due to a huge confluence of different things), but Fullmetal President is finished. It is a very silly little game, and more than anything an excuse to narrate explosions and mess around with surreal Americana. Regardless I hope you have fun with it. It was tremendous fun to make and playtest. One of my friends played Dogg McCool, the White House Dog (named by the First Daughters), and it was all-around amazing. Kyle Shaezer did three pieces of phenomenal a...
