Unsanctioned poll on 'Reddit' site

Some Patrons come and go, but this?

 Dude!

But that's not why I am here. I noticed there was a poll on Reddit posted a few days before I did my 10th Anniversary poll.

I'm flattered! But I'm also not going to be all 'cringe' and barge on there making comments, but it's ...

Tenth Anniversary !

November 20th, 2014 I published the Macintosh SE video as the first in a potential series of documentaries on Macintosh computer models. One motivation was to justify a collection that I had been building since 2004. Another reason was that there were very few videos on old Macintosh computers... at least very few that I found helpful. I figured I should start with the first Macintosh my family owned, and that was a Macintosh SE, purchased just before Apple released the SE/30... not that we c...

VCF Midwest discussion panel

I watched the VCF Midwest 2024 YouTube Creator discussion panel the other day and thought about how I would answer the questions posed to the panel.

Since most questions were for the whole panel, it's easy for us as viewers to chime in. On the downside, having so many questions for the whole panel meant we mostly heard from the most talkative members on the panel and not necessarily the most i...

Welcome to Apple ][

1986 was the last time that I touched an Apple ][. That was playing Infocom adventure games at my local library. I always thought that when they became obsolete, there would be endless numbers at second hand stores costing almost nothing. That never did happen in my experience .. I don't know about you.

To get a clear perspective on the early days of Macintosh, looking at the Apple ][ is ...

The road to the Mac Pro (early 2037) has begun

In the early days of the Macintosh video series, I thought it would be great to find someone to voice my videos instead of my own unprofessional voice. Today, I wouldn't think of doing that because using one's own voice adds uniqueness and character to the video when it's harder than ever to stand-out. But if I have to tell someone, "Sorry, I'm not VWestlife" one more time, I'll... anyway...

There's been a lot of advertizing for AI voice lately. Either with realistic text-to-voic...

Dotto on Data

I realize a Canadian show about computers from the 90's sounds interesting, but this is great! The corny presentation is endearing and the use of the Macintosh is now a nostalgic look-back. Derek from MacFolklore Radio uploaded these to the internet Archive.

From his description:

"Originally broadcast 1994. Source tapes purchased in 1994 directly from the Knowledge Network/Open Learning Agency (R.I.P.) in Burnaby, British Columbia. Digitized by Mac Folklore Radio 2005-07-28 ...

'Actman' interview with Marty O'Donnell

in my two Marathon videos, I've beaten up on Actman for his poor research. This time I have to commend him for giving a central figure in the history of Bungie, Marty O'Donnell, a forum to talk about Bungie. He was there shortly after Marathon Infinity was released in 1996 to the point he was fired in 2014. Some really great insights into what happened to the company, and how it devolved from a legendary c...

Zork

Among of the latest set of TI-99 artifacts was a Zork I disk and manual. Since it was the only Infocom title he had, the game was probably not his thing. I had played through Zork II and III, but never the most popular Zork I. Playing that one on a TI-99 would be my ultimate retro experience, so I look forward to that. Zork was written on a mainframe and was a monstrous 80K in size, so when they wanted to ...

More NetWare *Technical*

This is a follow-up to my previous post on the subject, with some additional insights.

The Apple employee who worked on NetWare for PPC imaged the unreleased NetWare 4 demo disc for me, which I forwarded through Neozeed (Virtually Fun blog) to be dissected by someone with more expertise than I. It was Cameron Kaiser, who helped me with my Apple Network Server video research. He was able to properly dissect it, and his highly detailed report can be found here.

TI-99 Alcove

Unfortunately, I have to report that the old family TI-99 computer, joysticks and games were stolen from my late mother's house recently. I hope someone enjoys it, wherever it ends up, and I hope they have a 20+ year old TV to play it on.

Occasionally I get nostalgic for my pre-Macintosh computer, the Texas Instruments TI-99/4A, so I maintain a small collection of that stuff. I have a Patreon-only video on that computer if you haven't watched it.

So, I went after some new TI stuff...

Happy Canada Day

To those in Canada, at least. To our neighbours to the south, happy 4th of July soon. and everyone else... I'm a bit vague on.

As promised, a video of the re-vitalized backyard. I'm not purposefully trying to feature the pool, nor is this a product placement.

65scribe says, "If you want the best pool, get Bestway. Exclusively at Canadian Tire for $299. Water not included."

Feedback

At the one week point exactly, I can say the release of the Power Macintosh G5 video was a great success. Views in the first week were 50% more than my subscriber count, so I can't complain at all. Comments always come in heavy after a video release, but this one was a lot more.

Comments are nearly all positive, but human nature is to focus on the few negative comments. Most negative comments I predicted... A Windows guy mentions PAE allowed more than 4GB on 32-bit system. But I'm talki...

The Power Macintosh G5

The long-awaited video is finally released. Members can watch it here, ad-free. It is being released on YouTube today as well, if you prefer to watch videos there.

When I was testing the ad placement on YouTube, an ad for Alibaba came on, using cheese graters as an example of how good their prices are! What?! ... I can't avoid that G5 nickname!

Now the intro:

The Power Macintosh G5 was was released in 2003 into a sea of technological challenges and change. What looked like ...

When the world fell ...

So, I committed not to cut my back lawn until I finished the G5 video. That did not go so well.

However, we now have a completed video, which I will be rolling out, along with the lawnmower.

My mind is already on the next video, but excited to release the G5 video finally. Thanks for your patience!

YouTube lowers the boom

I uploaded a private draft version of the G5 video to YouTube. A couple pieces of music were caught by YouTube's copyright screener. I should have known before I uploaded that those would be a problem! Given the amount of musical pieces in the video, I was happy that's ALL they found.

So, I turn to Alexander Brandon (Funky Rustic), composer for the Unreal and Unreal Tournament games for some "free-to-use with credit" music that he made available to me.

Unfortunate for composers th...

Wrapping up

Thank god the narration is done!

It's been a long time since I spray-painted that blob of plastic in preparation to shoot the G5 video. This video project was larger than any I've undertaken. It was also a refuge for me from grim realities of a difficult year. I've heard many times that the videos help some viewers in the same way, and that's good to know.

It features the usual: running jokes, obscure references, Orson Welles, damn!, the oil museum, but a lot of deep diving into ...

Behind the Scenes - Ep. 4

The most laborious part of the video is voice-over, which is where I am now with the G5 video. Listen to the clip to hear me falling into madness.

Besides my impressive ability to flub lines, there’s always the uncontrolled elements.

- someone walking around upstairs

- neighbour starts hammering or using small engine

- phone goes off

- I realize that what I wrote is a...

Denfield Hoard video creates discussion

The Denfield Hoard release to YouTube last week was a great success, and I was happy to see viewers were excited to see something new.

Someone not as familiar with Mac models asked a reasonable question.

Like moth to flame, experts quickly answered, who then argued (kinda) about the success of the Molar Mac, then piled on Steve Jobs.

My overall impression is that Gil Ame...

Report

I'm happy to report the 'linch pin' 2008 Mac Pro is back in operation! What did I do? Nothing really. It just started working again once I disconnected everything, let it sit for a few days, reseated the RAM cards, then reconnected. Since then, I have not had any hint of the previous issue.

That's hardly a technical fix, but it happens enough that it's my first approach.

Today I set up the 450MHz G3 PowerMac with matching 17" Studio Display. and powered it up. I realized the optic...

Poll Results

It was a great turn-out at the poll, so thanks for sharing your preference. Very helpful data!

It looks like the dominant favourite is:

G3 AIO

This aligns nicely with my recent purchase of one. Votes may have been motivated by my voiced distaste for it's appearance at every opportunity, plus my short video published here when I bought it.

The runners-up:

- G3 Blue and Ice Tower: A great model to study Steve Jobs' contribution to ...

One of life's trials

I've been mostly offline for the last couple weeks as my mother passed on Monday, January 29th. I don't want to bring everyone down with that news, just to acknowledge her contribution to all this.

Like most from her generation, she did not embrace the personal computer age, but made sure I had every opportunity. As an elementary teacher, she gave me my first exposure to a computer by bringing the school's Commodore PET 4016 home for a weekend in 1982. This was allowed presumably ...

2008 Mac Pro is down

After not waking from sleep a few times, my main workhorse for 16 years, the Mac Pro 2008 will chime but not boot. I'll figure it out, but I realize that I need to get an emergency back-up in place.

The closest I have is a 2006 Mac Pro. In the G5 video, I touch on the first round of Mac Pros with their Quad Core Xeons at 2.0, 2.66 and 3.0GHz, saying, "I never see 2Ghz! Did anyone actually...

Mac Pro 2013 was acquired

After months of watching most* of the Mac Pro 2013 used market prices slip, I opted to jump on a very interesting unit.

* There are still stubborn sellers insisting on $1500 or more for run-of-the-mill spec models. They also insist that people not waste their time asking for a lower price, so I didn’t.

This is a unit upgraded to 64GB RAM, dual 6GB AMD FirePro D700 graphics (AMD? What happened to ATi?), 2.7GHz 12-core Xeon E5 CPU and 4GB internal HD.

The report of my death was an exaggeration

So, this appeared on Reddit this morning. At first I thought they were probably talking about pioneer 'Jason's Macintosh Museum', but it turned out to be me!

While not the wording I would choose to summarize my channel, a number of users were able to set this person straight.

My upload frequency is a bit of a problem for the YouTube algorithm, but there were great positive responses to this post, which would otherwise just be an indicator of a fall into irrelevancy.

September update

1) I got a comment on the LC video:

"The price was garbage - you could buy a 386 with a hard drive, an SVGA monitor, and a SVGA card for that kind of money."

This is the outdated nuts&bolts comparison argument that ignores the user experience. I was having to flip back-and-forth between Mac with System 6/7 and PC with Windows 3.0/DOS Shell at that time, and I wouldn't have chosen to use the PC even if someone gave it to me. That said, we couldn't afford the LC but settled for ...
