Unfortunately I am still having issues with some occasional static hiss for my outdoor recordings. I tried to apply some slight noise reduction to make it less apparent but the noise reduction effects were too noticeable during some parts, therefore I completely left it without any additional processing.

VIFA Helsinki, JBL Xtreme 3 & Sony SRS-XB43 - outdoor soundcheck

I was curious if the vintage VIFA "Helstinki" had any chance against JBL's and Sony's most recent releases and headed out to try it out by mysself. 

Also trying out my new DJI Pocket 2 to see if it's suitable for my 1st person type of videos.

A visit at Mediamarkt

Today I went to my local Mediamarkt store to ask for a JBL Xtreme 3 loaner but they haven’t got any yet. Also online there are hardly any stores which have them in stock, therefore my plan to compare a Minirig 2.1 system against 2 Xtreme 3 was scotched.

But I had the chance to try out the Sony SRS-XB33 and compare it to the JBL Charge 4. To my surprise the Sony is not that bad and sounds definitely better than the bigger XB43. I may get one in future for a more detailed test.

Minirigs vs JBL Xtreme 3

I made a bold claim that a Minirig 2.1 setup can compete against 2 JBL Xtreme 3. I am thinking of driving to the Mediamarkt and borrow a 2nd Xtreme 3 because today is the last day before our new lockdown, besides I already prepared my Xtreme 3 for return. 

I could maybe shoot a quick video today and wanted to ask you if there is any interest in this.

Sony SRS-XB43 - frequency response measurements

The Sony SRS-XB43 measures quite natural with some dynamic bass boost for low levels and also some stronger treble boost with peaks at 9 and 11 khz, which makes treble appear quite rough and grainy, especially as there is a strong drop above 11khz which results in lack of details and resolution. I am not sure if the tweeters are doing anything at all.

Aiwa Exos-3 vs JBL Xtreme 3

I got a  new first firmware from Aiwa for the Exos-3 which still doesn't have the 3dB boost mode included, thus I made the outdoor comparison still with the old version and updated afterwards for the indoor comparison. I think after the update it sounds also better at high levels, but I need to wait until the final version to give my verdict. 

I would still change treble though as the fullrange drivers contribute too much to the treble response, while the tweeter is hardly hea...

I shot some videos during our holidays and I like this one by far most.

I did this walkthrough twice as I was so impressed by the setting. First one was shot with GoPro's own Hypersmooth but it didn't turn out that great, so I ran down again and shot another walk with Reelsteady which you can see here. I tried to avoid faster head movements to prevent Reelsteady doing stronger dynamic zoomings, but I couldn't eliminate them completely. I also tried to hide the joints of all separate vid...

JBL Xtreme 3 - frequency response measurements

I managed to do some quick outdoor measurements of the Xtreme 3, despite some slight wind. As usual measured elevated at around 1.5m from 50cm exactly on axis.

The thick line is half volume, bass reduction already starts 2 steps above that and becomes pretty obvious at maximum volume. No bass boost for low levels, and the 6khz peak I was hearing from my first impressions video is also visible well.

Souvernirs from holidays

We are back from holidays and I wanted to share some impressions with you.

I have also shot several videos that I will upload on my binaural channel over time.

My travel audio gear

For those interested what audio equipment I took on our holidays, I kept it rather modest and simple.

I have just the Tribit MaxSound Plus as portable speaker, anything bigger would have been overkill. I like the Tribit because of its neutral tuning and cheap price, in case it brakes it won’t be a big loss and I can always buy a new one.

I use the Lypertek Tevi with the Soundcore Liberty 2 Pro tips. The tips from Earfun Free also sound good but don’t fit into the charging case...

Holidays

We are on holidays this week. And although I had ordered the Xtreme 3 last Monday it didn’t arrive until Friday. It will be probably delivered today with nobody being at home. Therefore I will hopefully be able to pick it up by next Monday only. I had really hoped to take it with me to at least shoot some first unboxing at the terrace with a view of the Alps in the background. But now I am again late to the party as usual.

Included are some sound samples of headphone recordings unprocessed and compensated with 2 different types of in-ear microphones.
