update on the character for this month
hey ya’ll, due to some heavy personal life issues the character is going to be a little late this month. it’s a good one though, it’s the happiest i’ve been with one in a while because i took a very different approach than normal and it really payed off. i look forward to showing yall, i expect to be done with it in the next few days. thanks so much for the continued support, it means the world especially right now!

here's the character for this month, sapphire! she's half demon but tries to avoid her demon side and act like a human. some things give her away as a demon, like her eyes (and also it's hard to notice but she is literally entirely blue and has horns).
she tends to be bratty and loud, but has a good heart at the end of the day even if it's sometimes hard to tell. she always makes the room she's in 20 degrees colder and she can go even lower if she's angry.

some of the most important features of a good character drawing on a technical level for me are strong form (even if it isn't in perspective, although that does help a ton) and strong gestures. since i paint most of the time, i usually let form issues slide until the grayscale stage where i do a lot of my refinement normally. but since i'm just focusing on drawing here i need to find ways to really sell the form with just lines. i decided that means i probably need to refine the drawing...

one of the benefits of doing lots of sketches like this is that it gives me time to really try out any idea i have since each sketch only takes a few minutes. here im trying this idea that lucky grows living plants that they then teach to say bad words (and also they take care of them). these are a little stiff to me still (which i do think plays a big part in that life thing i talked about) but they each tell at least a small story and i really like that. even top left which has the least go...
