For our next Extended Play Lounge, I'm making this one a VINYL edition. These are all LPs that I now have in my possession that I have not yet heard. Which one is your choice?
Note: I've left out Quadrophenia this time...but it will return to the poll soon.
Note: I've heard Safe (Canon Song) from Fish Out of Water, and I've heard Departure and Ride My See-Saw from In Search of the Lost Chord.
The voting on this round will go through Friday Night. Happy Voting!

I'm very pleased to present this special Behind the Score episode. I'm joined in my home studio by John Franek, one of my dearest friends and colleagues. We'll be listening to and providing analysis on his orchestral work Sea Change.
John will talk about the opportunity to travel to Bulgaria to premiere this piece, the work's point of view, and about all the fascinating extended techniques he notates for the orchestra members to perform.
We had a great time discussing this, ...

In this latest episode, we return to King Crimson for the third time in the Extended Play Lounge with their 1981 album Discipline. I previously listened to 'In the Court of the Crimson King' (Ep. 3) and 'Red' (Ep. 11).
I also previously dissected the title track in our Behind the Score series (Ep. 18).
For this album, I took time for an extended read-in, which did include score study. I refrained from listening to the recording until filming, but I was relatively familiar wi...

This month, we're returning to the theme of 'Diamonds in the Rough'. We first did this back in May (Episode 4). As this topic is a primary vehicle by which I can really learn about and include overlooked bands and songs, we'll keep doing these periodically.
We had massive participation and close voting over on Discord, where we received 55 submissions (our highest number yet). Sixteen of these submissions received 15 upvotes or higher. Your task is to pick up to five

I'm pleased to announce our next online class. In Exploring Chromaticism, we will plumb the depths into the sounds that expand upon diatonicism. We'll study secondary dominants, modal mixture, modal alterations, altered pre-dominants, pitch class sets, and more!
We'll meet on Mondays during October and November at 6:00pm eastern time. Each session is 1-hour, and we'll meet via zoom. The class...

Congrats to Discipline by King Crimson for winning the latest EPL poll!
I'm reading in on this album today, and I've decided to study the score (since I have it) a bit before recording the episode. With this work being a good representative of Math Rock, I want to have a bit of familiarity with their patterns before I hear it for the first time.
So, look for the Discipline EPL in the next 3-4 days. Now, I'm off to Philadelphia for the Porcupine Tree concert!

In this episode of Behind the Score, I'm taking you through one of my favorites from my own catalog. Serenade to Music is written for SSAA chorus with piano and oboe and makes use of text by Shakespeare from The Merchant of Venice. I hope you enjoy!

OK...the next episode in our Extended Play Lounge series is coming up soon. I'm coming off of Aquarius by Haken (which I very much enjoyed) as a Doug's Choice. So, we're going back to our normal polling.
And, for this poll, I decided to choose several A-List Bands and Albums that have received many votes in the community against each other.
This poll will be active through September 15. Happy Voting!

In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to Sacrificed Sons by Dream Theater. This song centers on the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 in New York City. For this video, I'm making use of the live concert version of this from their Score DVD, filmed in 2006. This is heavy material, and there are a few news clips included from that fateful day. Thank you for wa...

For this EPL episode, I made a power play and picked Aquarius, the debut album from Haken, as a 'Doug's Choice'. I consider Haken one of my 'adopted' bands that are in their current early or major part of their career. I've been taken with their range of sound and expert playing from the first song (Cockroach King) I heard. As I mention in the video, I've had the opportunity to interview Ross Jennings. And, I've met Richard Henshall after seeing them from the 2nd row at the Kenswick outside P...

I'm pleased to present our Fan Favorites video for the month of August. This month, we focused on songs that have been on the Master List for a while, starting with 25 songs. Seven songs ended up making the video, and I enjoyed the listen.
Note: This was my first attempt at recording with the new camera. I don't have the settings dialed in yet. And, I didn't know it stops recording at the 30 minute mark. So, the first two songs are with the new camera and the rest of the video is with t...

In this episode, I'm returning to the music of Renaissance. I've had them on the brain ever since I secured tickets to see them on tour this coming fall. I first listen to the song without the score (like a normal reaction), then listen again while consulting the score. I hope you enjoy!

I was quite pleased to listen to this album...my first time hearing this group. What amazing musicianship! This music is bursting at the seams, even when it's slow and tender.
Thankfully, I was able to access some sheet music to these songs. It helped to be able to see some of the riffs and melodies going by. I hope you enjoy!

As we start our 2nd year, we return to Rush for their third appearance in the series. I really enjoyed this listen. These albums from right around 1980 (from a variety of bands) are so interesting in how they reflect a rapidly changing commercial music scene. I think this album threads the needle as good as any.
I hope you enjoy!

After we overwhelmingly decided to NOT include Dream Theater in this first episode of our 2nd year, we spent quite a bit of time pondering which direction to go for the poll for this episode. We thought of simply putting the top five vote-getters from our Discord Recommendations and Master List against each other. But, what we ended up deciding to do is to include a Poll of recent 'runners-up'.
This is a poll that features albums and artists that have come in 2nd...and we're giving them...

As we finish out the first year of Behind the Score programming, I wanted to go back to some of my roots and share with you a beautiful choral work called Sleep, composed by Eric Whitacre.
Eric is one of the major choir-music rock stars currently working today. This piece was written in 2000 with text by Tony Silvestri, and has sold millions of copies worldwide and is one of the most-performed choral works of the last quarter decade. Specifically for us, I wanted to point to some ...
