Hey y'all!
So, we're through an entire year's cycle of Extended Play Lounge episodes. And, with our next episode, we'll be starting year 2. The question on my mind is this: To 'Dream Theater' or not to 'Dream Theater'?
We started everything off with Scenes From a Memory. And, we also included Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence in December. So, it might be nice to return to this great band's work.
To that end, I'm putting this simple question to the community...do we pick from a...

Hey Y'all!
We started this Patreon on July 25, 2021. It's hard to believe it's already been a year! So, on this coming Saturday, July 23, we're celebrating with a special Daily Doug Live Hangout, and all our patrons are invited!
We're meeting at 4:00pm eastern time. We'll likely be on for a few hours or more. We'll listen to some great music, chat about things happening in music and on the channel, and enjoy each other's company.
This is normally...

I'm sure most of you won't find it hard to believe that Starman is the only song on this album that I had ever heard coming into this listen. So, buckle in for a fun 'mostly-first' listen and ride through the galaxy with David Bowie and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

After a few weeks of submissions and community voting, we have a list of 19 songs up for your consideration. This month's theme is cover songs. I'm listing the Title, then the Artist, then the Original Artist for clarification.
Vote for your favorite 5 on this list that you want me to hear. The top 10 (approximately) will get into the video.
The poll is live through Saturday the 23rd. Happy voting!

For this edition of Behind the Score, I'm tapping into the music of Queen for the first time in this series. Thanks to Randy for sending me the chart to this one.
I was intrigued as I read in on this piece...as it's just a few songs behind Arena Rock anthems We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions. It's a little song by Brian May, who sings the lead vocal and plays the piano, about loss and remembrance, paying homage to his childhood cat.
Even in a simpler harmonic p...

We're fresh off of Queensryche and Operation: Mindcrime in Episode 23. Now, I'm continuing with the other top three vote-getters in the last poll (because of broad support), including Camel, David Bowie, and Gentle Giant. The two new options, pulled from our list of recommendations, include Return to Forever and Jeff Wayne.
One vote per person this time...voting goes through Thursday, July 14. Happy voting!

I was pleased to see that Queensrÿche won our poll, because I've been itching to hear this epic concept album for a while. And, it didn't disappoint. Besides the top notch musical performances, the story was quite moving and thought provoking. I hope you enjoy!

I was wanting to scratch my classical itch for this episode, and I went with one of my favorite short form choral works. Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine is a masterclass in technique, with its refined sweeping lyrical lines and sumptuous harmonies...and he was only 19 when he wrote it! I hope you enjoy this Behind the Score look at one of the classics of the choral music repertoire.

The 18 options below are the selections that have made it through the first round of recommendations and up-voting. For the Golden Earring and Allman Brothers choices, I'm including 2 songs each. This is due to strong voting for all these choices.
So, your task is to choose your TOP FIVE...vote for up to five of these selections to make it into the Fan Favorites video at the end of the month.
I'll be including the top 10 in our upcoming video. The polling is active through S...

Our 22nd installment of the Extended Play Lounge has us visiting the music of the Moody Blues for the first time in this series. This was my first time hearing this album in its entirety, and some of the songs were first time listens. It's a beautiful and historic album, and I had a wonderful time reacting to it. I hope you enjoy!

In this episode, we're diving into some middle-eastern jazz fusion. I'm new to Tigran Hamasyan, and I am finding his music quite fascinating. The rhythms here are complicated in ways that prog fans will really groove with...and, there's some good heavy sounds for the metal fans too. I hope you enjoy.

I'm due for another 'Doug's Choice' in our Extended Play Lounge episodes. And, this time, I'm going with Days of Future Passed by The Moody Blues.
This one has been on my list for quite some time. And, I haven't listened to any of their music in several months. So, I'll be working on this one for a release sometime around mid-month.
Chime in if there's a specific version of this that is preferred. Thanks!

I'm returning to the music of Focus for the first time since I got high while listening to Hocus Pocus. Eruption is also from Moving Waves, taking up the entire 2nd side. I found the juxtaposition of pre-baroque harmonies and early-70s rock band instrumentation so fascinating and fun. Along the way, I'm discussing augmented sixth chords, why many are told to shun parallel fifths, and some general opera history. I hope you enjoy!

In the previous EPL, we took a look at Rush and their Moving Pictures (1981). Before that, we listened to Rick Wakeman's Six Wives of Henry VIII (1973). I loved both of them!
This time, though, I'm looking to dive into a newer recording, so, I've chosen potential albums that were released after 2000. The list of bands and musicians here represent some of my personal favorite "finds" since I've been doing The Daily Doug.

Our next installment of the Extended Play Lounge features the most commercially successful album in the history of Rush: Moving Pictures.
I had never heard the entire album before, although Tom Sawyer and Limelight were familiar to me. There's not a weak song on the entire album.
Turn it up and enjoy!
