Fabulous Fern Physics

Here is an initial experiment with 2 important aspects of Dino Run 2:

1) Smoothly flowing foliage - as you run by trees, bushes and grass in the game, they need to react to force of your dino and the general chaos around you.

2) They always need to be "pixel-pure" - meaning we never rotate pixel art in a way that results in something that doesn't look like pixel art.

It's not a perfect solution, but it's a great start!

This Month In Development

Is all about 3 things:

1) Create new "ambient dinos" for various terrain chunks.  These dinos don't run, but casually do their thing while you rush past them.  Do they know they are about to die?  Probably not...

2) Get ready for the upcoming KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN, tentatively scheduled to launch on Jan 24th View Post

Come preview our Kickstarter campaign copy on Discord

We have the first draft of our Kickstarter campaign copy done and it's SO LONG that it makes no sense to paste it here.  So head on over to our discord server and check out the patrons-only channel (dino_run_2_patrons) where all the text is available to read, and let us know what you think!

Brutally honest feedback is appreciated - we need to get this shaped up in the next 2 weeks for our big launch on January 24th.

Thanks!

Back in action...

We're back after a much needed holiday break.  Here is what's in store for the next month:

On the dev/coding side...

  • Create system / solve problem for allowing 15+ parallax layers in camera
  • Add up/down movement to camera - if we go too far up we see sky + clouds, if we go too far down we see grass & dirt
  • Add day/night/various times of day to camera test - probably shader-based
  • Add "red doom" to camera test - foreground turns black, BG turns...

The DinoStream (Alpha) is live!

Check it: http://www.dinorun2.com

It's bare bones to start, we'll be improving it over time, but consider this the main place to get weekly (or daily?) updates on our progress making the game.

We'll still post Patron-only dev updates here.  The DinoStream is more of a general public-facing dev blog and the private posts here will be more revealing / personal (no nudity though, that's for the 50+/month tier).

The DinoStream Is Coming Soon...

And it's something that we're very excited about.

We've been working on a little piece of technology that's going to make it very easy for us to convey our progress on the game.  We could use some other microblogging service, but none of them did *exactly* what we needed, and we're very picky!

The DinoStream will live on DinoRun2.com and will be THE place where we upload and describe the ENTIRE process of making the game, from beginning to end.  It will ...

Your Patreon Dollars At Work

We just received our first payout from Patreon, and put the amount in the TOTAL FUNDS RAISED on pixeljam.com/dinorun that we are using to make DINO RUN 2.

Current total is $4657, which is almost halfway to Milestone #1!

If you feel like sharing this accomplishment, you can RT this: htt...

It Begins...

Here we have the first evidence that we're actually doing something with your support - neat huh?

This simple camera test is in Unity, using Pro Camera 2D. I'm moving the camera left and right with the arrow keys.

There are about 15 separate layers in this scene, all created in 2013 for our original Kickstarter video.  A lot of the original assets will be used until we feel they need to be updated.  Some will probably remain exactly as they are though, as they already ...

Humble Beginnings (For Dino Run and our Patreon)

It seems fitting that we start out very first post with a sketch made by Rich Grillotti (one half of the founding members) on a road trip in 2006.  Little did we know what the game would become in the next 10 years.

It started as a simple flash game, then became Dino Run SE, then DX, and as of yesterday, Dino Run 2!

This post is an introduction to what you can expect from u...
