You can play Elden Ring co-op in VR!

Dear friend and VR connoisseur extraordinaire Brian Tate (yes, "the" Brian from the wonderful Flatscreen to VR modding community) sent me a heads-up that I feel deserves its own post: you can now experience the incredible fantasy world of Elden Ring in VR together with your friends, thanks to the Seamless Co-op mod!

In the description of the video above you will find a brief tutorial. It mentions that f...

Steady 1st person cam, orange is the new blue

Hey friends! Just a couple of weeks have gone by since this beautiful community's first birthday, and I already have another amazing number to add to the list: 3,055 Patrons as of today!!!

Now, I know that on average one in three will cancel the pledge before the end of the month, so as June rolls in the number is likely to drop to around 2K again. But still, for a moment there we touched the stars []-)

Happy Birthday, community!

Today our Patreon turns 1! I just can't believe it.

It was May 15, 2021 when I put out the first post into the void of the Internet, unsure if anybody would be interested, and since then the ride has been so wild and breathtaking that it feels both like an age and just moments ago O_O

Some numbers for the growth of our virtual baby:

  • 7 open-world modded games, not including GTA V and NOLF2 which are freely available on GitHub;
  • 67 posts;

Virtual tourism, slow motion and lots of 3rd-person combat from Ian!

And you don't want to miss his truly rigorous, in-depth analysis and exploration of, ahem, creature buttholes []-D

I'm sorry for the post flood these days, but I just finished watching the whole video and Ian has really outdone himself this time. I simply had to repost it here!

Almost a full hour of traveling around the Lands Between, giving a close inspection to Torrent's mane, comparing the relative merits of giants' and dragons' behinds, beating bad guys in slow motion after ta...

Elden Ring VR troubleshooting

This post is meant to be a collection of known issues and (when possible) solutions. Please add a comment here if you have trouble with the R.E.A.L. VR mod for Elden Ring or if you have found a fix that you want to share with the community. I'll keep updating the FAQ when new information comes up.

R.E.A.L. VR mod for Elden Ring

Welcome to Virtual Reality, o ye tarnished!!!

Installation is very simple:

  • make sure the game was run pancake at least once, so that it had a chance to create your user profile;
  • unzip the mod archive attached at the bottom of this post into the "ELDEN RING\Game" folder where "eldenring.exe" is, without creating a subfolder and without moving any files around manually;

RDR2 mod working again (Release 3.3.3)

Alexander Blade never fails to deliver the goods! I also had to make a small revision to my own R.E.A.L. VR mod as the Rockstar update had caused one of my hooks to fail.

Find the new release in attachment: it already comes with AB's updated Script Hook for convenience, so you won't have to make a separate download and patch things up manually. There is also a README file with quick setup directions for new users.

For you returning cowboys, remember that you always need to run Rea...

How to temporarily deactivate my mods to play pancake

Since the official game updates from Rockstar have been breaking VR play, a few of you have been asking how to keep playing flat while we wait for the replacement Script Hook libraries to drop.

You don't need to uninstall anything, much less to reinstall the game(s). With just a couple of simple steps you can easily prevent my mods from attaching and return to your original 2D graphics settings.

In Windows, open the folder where the main game executable is found, and make sure tha...

GTA V and RDR2 updated

A quick heads-up: Rockstar just released updates for both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. As is usually the case, the updates change everything around in the game executable, and that means that Script Hook (a base component for modding Rockstar games) needs to be revised by its author.

Alexander Blade, the mastermind behind Script Hook, typically takes a few days to release a new version of his tools. This time however he will have twice the fun, due to the synchronized r...

The Big One is coming!

In case you had any social lives left after Cyberpunk 2077, this is going to take care of that little problem for you. Modding it certainly took care of mine []-D

Soon! This will likely be a work-in-progress for quite some time, but I'll be doing my best to have a first playable version by the end of next week. Keep your VR legs in shape, because they're really going to be put to the test *_^

The state of VR

Or, "You can put your hands down now, citizen" []-D

I was recently interviewed by Tomislav Bezmalinovic from German website https://mixed.de/ about my Patreon, VR modding and the state of VR gaming in general.

Tomislav's questions led to a rather interesting discussion, which of course had to be summarized in the published article, so I've decided to put the full transcript to the original interview here. I'm also opening t...

Solution finally found for RDR2 freezes/crashes!

Wow. After almost a year, I have stumbled upon a totally undocumented, hidden setting that actually appears to solve the asset-loading-related bug in Red Dead Redemption 2.

If you don't know what bug I'm talking about, please see this post.

Rockstar never acknowledged the issue, despite many people reporting it all over the Internet. It's not VR-specific, although the additional stress on the GPU caused...

Cyberpunk 2077 1.52 update broke some mods...

... but apparently it didn't break VR!!!

When I first wrote this post I was cautious because my log reported a few patching errors, which are normal after game updates but usually require intervention on my part.

Instead it looks like the patches that fail are no longer necessary with the 1.52 game version, and everything appears to work as it should :-)

As a few users have reported in the comments below, you might want to hold back a few days on the update because some othe...

Full combat tutorial in VR

Release 3.2.0 of the R.E.A.L. mod for Cyberpunk 2077 (which will be attached to the next post today) brings many improvements to the VR conversion, and as announced it also introduces a new interaction model for the HUD.

Since there is so much new stuff, and they say a video is worth a thousand screenshots (or something like that, can't remember) I decided to record my realtime gameplay of the full combat simulation tutorial, which was one of the most problematic sections of the game in...

Mega-update coming soon!

Status as of March 15: Adding to the list below, I came up with an idea for a novel user interaction mode that will allow you to read all the information in the HUD comfortably, even when it's headlocked (like during scans, remote hacks, looting, etc.), and no matter how small the center focus area on your headset is. I find it very intuitive and easy to get the hang of; it doesn't break the immersion in any way, and it completely changed my enjoyment of the more...

How to make ReShade effects work in VR

Today I'd like to talk about a little-known feature of the mod.

My modding framework, as you can read about in the "Legal" tab of the overlay, is based on the wonderful ReShade injector by Crosire. In my early releases (before 2.1.3 that is) I had to disable its built-in effect system though, because it would operate on the backbuffer drawn on the display monitor instead of the images sent to the VR headset. That meant that when using the effects you would have to pay the GPU performanc...

Cyberpunk 2077 troubleshooting

I'm so excited about this new mod, my head is spinning from all the positive feedback and anticipation I'm getting from you guys!

Cyberpunk 2077 is a complex game, and it can be punishing on some PCs. Also, it's not completely free of bugs yet, even before adding the VR layer. So I'm expecting lots of support requests, ranging from "the game doesn't even start on my machine" to "how can I improve my fps on this GPU?"

That's why I'm jumping the gun and creating this troubl...

I recorded the full Braindance tutorial while playing with my upcoming R.E.A.L. VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077. There are some slight spoilers if you have never played the game before, but nothing about the story because this is only a tutorial segment.

Now, conventional wisdom says that you should not put on YouTube VR videos recorded in a format that can viewed in 3D with Google Cardboard, because nobody uses it anymore. It doubles down by r...

The headset thread

Patron Jason Gary gave me the idea for this post, so kudos to him, and in general to all of you folks for keeping this community so alive and resounding with good vibes!!!

As you know, VR seems to be going through an awkward phase where there are more headset models (with new ones coming out seemingly every day) than games available to be played on them. Okay, that might be an exaggeration, but still.

I have a few different ones, and I try to keep up with issues and quirks even fo...

Release 2.2.5 (not supporting Cyberpunk 2077 yet)

Dear friends, as you saw from the post title, I have mixed news for you :-/

I know that you want the bad news first, so here goes: despite my best efforts, the new CP2077 mod isn't ready yet. I made good progress for a while, but then I got completely stuck for days, trying to sort out the HUD. I might have found a workable solution now, but I still need to implement and test it; also, the game is huge and very complex, so other issues are almost guaranteed to crop up.
