Release 9.2.0 supports Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales

Dear friends, it's the end of 2022! Let's celebrate with not one, but TWO amazing Spidey games []-D

Before we begin though, let me state clearly that I'm deeply sorry for the raw state in which you're going to find the mod. Due to all the time I had to spend on AER v2, and to some health issues I experienced recently, there will be several operations that you'll have to perform manually and some annoying problems still left to resolve.

Setup

If you have an NVIDIA card, mak...

Spidey is coming!!

This month we have all kinds of spiders spinning their virtual webs around here: giant killer spiders, friendly neighborhood spiders, ...

Fearless friend Beardo Benjo has ventured where nobody has ever gone before, and recorded footage of the latest beta version of the R.E.A.L. VR framework supporting Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered. Take a look at his virtual adventures in the video above, and please remember to like and subscribe because we all want VR to grow, and the work he's doing ...

Happy holidays!!

Hey community, 'tis the time to be jolly! Despite the giant spiders that seem hell bent on feeding upon us!

I had to take a few days off for Christmas, otherwise my family would disown me.
[]-D

The launch of AER v2 has been a bit rough. I mean, I knew that a major release like that would not be painless. But I'm aware that there are several problems that are crippling the experience for some of you.

In particular, it seems that my implementation is not scaling down as smo...

Update 5: Release 9.0.3 delivers some extra goods!

  • Grounded: fixed an issue where the HUD would be wrongly projected onto the world (thus becoming unreadable) when your character had any piece of armor equipped;
  • Grounded: fixed a similar issue where the HUD would be wrongly projected onto the world (thus becoming too large and spilling off the headset screen) in the Steam version of the game;

Gaming in VR at 60 fps

If you're here, reading this, it's likely that you already know how grandiose it is to play your favorite games in VR. Just to be there, inside the virtual world. To be able to crane your neck and peek behind a corner. Friend or foe? See and admire details that would never even register with your brain if you were playing on a flat screen.

And yet, if you're here reading this, it's also pretty likely that your favorite game is not in VR (at least officially), because publishers are so s...

Are you afraid of spiders?

Hey fellas! I have been silent for a while, but in the upcoming days I'm going to positively flood your inbox with posts, to the point that you will probably think "man, I wish he would just shut up already".

Well, if my health permits. I have come down with something that feels suspiciously like COVID. These days it's become really hard to tell it apart from a normal bout of the flu, and even tests are inconclusive, especially in the beginning, but I have been feeling some shortness of...

The state of the mod

Hey dear friends,

it's been a while since my latest post, so I wanted to give you a status update and let you know where we are in terms of advancement on the various fronts (wow, that almost sounded like we're at war).

As you'll remember from my teaser of a month ago, Let's do the Space Warp again!, I have been working like a madman to improve the R.E.A.L. mods framework, addressing what is by far the ...

Dark Souls: Remastered servers back online!

So many game updates these days, it's becoming hard to keep track of them ;-)

As was promised a few months ago, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco (to neither of which I have any affiliation) have reactivated the servers for Dark Souls: Remastered.

That means that it's now possible to play DS:R online/multiplayer. However, the official update to the game client that came out yesterday broke my VR mod.

Release 8.4.0, attached below, fixes the issue and restores VR functionality. View Post

Release 8.3.0 (hotfix for CP2077 patch 1.61)

Today Cyberpunk 2077 was updated to game version 1.61, and that broke my VR mod. Release 8.3.0 fixes the issues introduced by the patch and allows you to play again!

I also added a small option, as requested by some of you, in case you wish to prevent the game HUD from ever becoming headlocked. It's imaginatively called "Allow HUD headlocking" and you can find it in the "CP2077" tab of the mod overlay. Leaving it enabled (the default) will keep your gameplay unchanged. I don't actually ...

Let's do the Space Warp again!

Hey friends, I'm sorry if lately things have been a bit quiet here on the release front ;-)

As you know, I've been working on a few new titles. One of them, which might or might not have swinging from skyscrapers as its awesome map traversal mechanic, gave me the insane urge to return to the drawing table and see whether Alternate Eye Rendering could be made even better. If you already know all about AER and/or want to cut to the chase, please skip to the "What's cooking" View Post

Performance and quality: can we haz both, pleez?

Not sure why I'm speaking LOLcats today, and in a public post to boot O_o

Anyway, Cyberpunk 2077 has attracted lots of players after the 1.6 Edgerunners update, and many of you have been asking for advice on how to make the game perform better in VR. Let me begin by stating that the problem is your typical triangle of constraints. Cheap hardware, image quality, frame rate: choose two out of three []-)

For example, you can upgrade to the incredible NVIDIA RTX 4090 (assuming you can...

Hotfix for 60 fps cap (NVIDIA cards)

This is an emergency release to work around an issue that is ruining the mod experience in VR for many of you.

There seems to be a bug in recent NVIDIA drivers that severely limits the performance of windowed applications. The driver is erroneously forcing V-Sync on, even if the application explicitly asked for an uncapped frame rate. That results in serious ghosting/jitter/judder in the best case, and can also lead to the eye images randomly being drawn out of place or even swapped. As...

Release 8.0.1 with a fix for AMD users

This is a maintenance release with a small (but crucial) fix for an issue that could prevent my latest mods from entering VR, especially on systems with an AMD GPU. Potentially affected games are Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Ghostrunner: Complete Edition, and Stray.

I already tried and failed twice to exterminate this particular bug, so let's hope that third time's the charm :-)

If you weren't affected by this problem, you don't need to update as there ar...

Science fiction, double feature

Who wants to be a cat? Everybody wants to be a cat! Because a cat's the only cat who knows where it's at :-P

For the first time, the new release attached below (8.0.0) supports two additional games! The idea for one of them was put in my mind by Brian Tate of Flat2VR. A few weeks ago, when I mentioned to him that I was going to mod Ghostwire: Tokyo, he quickly replied: "[...] Can't wait to do some wall running in VR soon!"

I thought: "Mmm. Wall running?!" I never knew there was an...

Release 7.3.0

Sep 18: Thanks for all the feedback, folks! It looks like this new release is working well, phew. Just a quick heads-up, courtesy of Patron Tomo: if you have been holding back on Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade because of its price, know that it's on sale at 30% off until Sep 29!!!

Since the Edgerunners Update (version 1.6), it seems that many people have returned to playing Cyberpunk 2077 in VR. Some of you, howe...

Release 7.1.0 supports Ghostwire: Tokyo!

7.2.0 update: Release 7.2.0, attached at the bottom of this post, fixes all VR-related problems introduced by the Edgerunners Update (1.6) that came out yesterday for Cyberpunk 2077. It also solves a regression in my VR conversion for Horizon: Zero Dawn that was making the crosshair appear very close to your eyes, instead of placing it at the correct depth in the world. I'm aware about the binoculars issue in Ghostwire: Tokyo; I will try to fix it too, but for th...

And now... for something completely different

The new conversion will have you looking up at the sky, so high your neck will creak! You'll be petting thoughtful animals! Walking in mysterious ways! And learning all manners of stuff about [redacted] food! And... sorry, that's already too many hints :-)

OK, one more hint: it's not Spidey (yet).

If I say so myself, I'm quite happy about this one. It plays like a game that was created for VR. So much visual stuff going on, I mean really spectacular graphics FX, right in ...

Release 6.1.0 brings slow motion and camera distance control to FF7R!

It's time to play this game on another level!

Interface

Since release 6.1.0, the mod extends support for my Quick Menu to Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.

You can bring the Quick Menu up at all times during gameplay by pressing both thumbsticks  on the gamepad or Pause on the keyboard. Note for returning users: there is no "double trigger" or "Back+Start" gesture for this game.

The Quick Menu behaves in a very special way: it will freeze action while it's op...

The war on modding continues

[I first wrote the following as a private email, but later decided that it would make more sense to turn it into an open letter, so anybody can use it as an instrument for discussion and hopefully a motivator for positive action.]

"Who in the hell—!?" "It's me, Ian, from Eurogamer!"

Incredible news, guys! This week Ian Higton exceptionally moved forward his VR corner from the usual Sunday schedule to mid-week, for an episode entirely devoted to our latest VR conversion for FF7R!

This is so exciting []-D

I'm also very happy because many of you have been asking to see video footage of the game, and due to my tinkering with the mod until the very last minute before release I had been unable to give a preview copy to YouTubers. Here's almost 40 minutes of frantic...

And what a mouthful of a name that is []-D

Amazingly, after all the requests I got for it in the past few months, none of you guessed the title! You guys didn't really believe I could pull it off, huh?

Many people thought of Spider-Man Remastered, and trust me, I'm thinking of it too :-) But my time machine has been acting out again, so I was unable to fetch the game from the future in order to support it in my VR framework. And as much as I love you guys speculating I might have ...

New mod coming out! And an important Quest 2 tip

As you know, when I'm mostly silent for a few days it's because I've been crunching hard to put out a new release :-)

Version 6 of the mod is coming soon! In one or two days, unless a showstopper bug is found during final testing—but I don't really expect that to happen, because it's been working reliably on my system for some time now.

The upcoming version 6 will support a new game that many of you have been requesting, and I'm pretty sure that even those among you who never me...

This week there has been much talk on the Web about the matter, and it quickly escalated to discussions about freedom of modding and balance of power. I followed the debate with great interest of course, and like others I do think, ...
