Video tutorial: how to install the mod and optimize Avatar for VR

Brandon has done it again! Embedded above you’ll find a thorough video explanation of how to install the R.E.A.L. VR mod (useful for those of you who are new to the Patreon, but even people who have already played with my mods can probably learn a new trick or two) and a final deep dive into the magical world of Pandora… actually, into the magical world of optimizing the game’s visible and hidden options so that the magical world of Pandora will look as good as possible in your headset...

Let's open Pandora's box

I remember when the first Avatar movie came out like it was yesterday. Nobody had ever seen anything like that, on the silver screen or elsewhere. Each single aspect of that movie was magnificent; it was a true 3D masterpiece. I lost count of how many times I watched it, first in theaters and then on Blu-Ray 3D. For a while then it seemed quite possible that its spectacular success would tip the industry over to filming everything using real stereoscopic cameras.

S is for Santa

Of course! Ho ho ho ho... Have you been good?

I'm pretty sure that you have, so, as is his custom, Santa is going to bring you something that you had been asking for, but also something unexpected.

Some of you have guessed it already. S is for Santa, but it's also short for Stereoscopic. And for Space, which is where we'll be going with our next adventure []-D

Actually we've just been to space, with Star Wars Outlaws. But this time we're moving to the best-looking planet in ...

Huge thanks to Robert Zak for featuring my mods on PC Gamer!!! I will not link to his article yet, because first I'd love for you to watch a fun video that our dear friend Brandon just posted on his brand new channel.

The video is embedded above. I'll be here while you watch... Please don't scroll down yet if you want to steer clear of spoilers!!

Getting there...

... One inch at a time. But slow and steady wins the race, right?

Release 15.1.0, attached at the bottom of this post, doesn't carry the wicked new thing with it yet, but it does provide fixes for lots of small and larger issues, including support for the latest unexpected (ha!) official update 2.2 to our beloved Cyberpunk 2077.

Changelog:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 The VR mod now fully supports the latest game version, patch 2.2. Should you find a...

Welcome new Patrons! The guided tour starts here

This post is especially meant for people who have just joined my Patreon and are in need of orientation, although even old friends and aficionados might find it useful to have most of the essential information and links gathered in one place.

Patreon allows for exactly 1 pinned post, so this will become the one that's always at the top of the list. I will try my best to keep it up to date with all the changes that I keep making to the mods and in sync with my other posts; please bear wi...

Brief status update

Hey folks!

The new "Big Thing" is coming! Soon! Ish!

I'm still trying to understand and solve a few stability issues, but we're getting there. It will impact many of the games in our collection, including future ones, so it's very important that I get this right or I'll be breaking too much stuff.

Speaking of broken stuff, before the big release I'll try to publish an interim version with just the fixes for games which have been damaged by recent official updates (or by mist...

Something wicked this way comes

OMG it's been a month already since my latest post O_O

Sorry folks for making you wait so long. But you know the drill by now. If I disappear for several weeks, it's because I'm working on some new contraption in my secret underground lab, where the Sun never shines and there's no distinction anymore between the real world and the virtual one.

And the longer I disappear, the bigger is the thing I'm working on.

This one is BIG. Like, maybe you thought the FOV optimizations (a...

Fix all the things

Happy October folks!!! Halloween is getting near, so let's treat ourselves to some new tricks!

Okay, that was probably not one of my best puns []-|

Anyway, I must admit that I'm very satisfied with where we are. As you will see below, I managed to make a lot of improvements and fixes to the R.E.A.L. VR framework, and all the games run as smoothly as they ever did.

In fact, I believe that we have now reached a point where if you don't go overboard with the most GPU-intensive ...

What is your preferred VR headset?

I'm always working to expand compatibility across different headset models and brands, but it's become impossibly hard to even own most of the headsets available on the market, let alone thoroughly test the mods on each one of them.

So, in order to prioritize efforts, I'd really like to know what is your go-to headset for playing the R.E.A.L. VR mods. Don't list here all the headsets you own: just the one(s) that you are using with the mods, or those that you would prefer to use if only...

Release 14: The huge update... NVIDIA's gonna hate!

Just kidding of course. I don't think what we're doing even registers on NVIDIA's radar :-D

But it does indeed feel like getting a free GPU upgrade! Testing has shown consistent gains across different games and headsets, and I would love to hear about your personal experience in the comments.

Sorry, this is going to be an extra-long post, even for my standards, because there's so much new stuff to talk about!

Graphics and performance guide for SWO

You all know Brandon, he needs no introduction by now. He's been helping with so many things on the Patreon, and with such indefatigable presence and kindness, I have no idea what I'd do without him. He truly is the Post Maester!

His latest contribution is a detailed analysis of everything there is to know in order to make Star Wars Outlaws run at its best in VR. With no further ado, I'll just step aside and let him take center stage []-D

Once an outlaw, always an outlaw...

As many of you who have been supporting me and my crazy dream for years will remember, this incredible adventure began with a game about outlaws :-)

Back then we were outlaws in the West, and having a hell of a great time at it honestly, until Take Too (oops, misspelled it) decided that we were not allowed to have fun in VR anymore.

But now we've graduated to being outlaws IN SPACE!

NVIDIA will hate this!

Haha okay, I know when I'm exaggerating. But still.

The magic is almost ready for release. So, even if I'm no good when it comes to recording videos, I wanted to show you a brief clip of what's about to drop.

As you can see from the info near the top of the mod overlay, I recorded this on a Quest 3 and RTX 4090. I used DLSS set to Quality, and set the pixel density to 30 ppd (pixels per degree). That turns out to be a pretty high display resolution of 4736x4912, or a rendering res...

No, not really. But something is coming very, very soon, and I promise it will rock your VR world

Like, who wouldn't want to snap their fingers (actually toggle a checkbox, but bear with me) and instantly, as if by virtue of some Flashy Old Voodoo magic, jump from the sluggish province of 60 fps to the shiny realm of 90 fps?

First person car combat in WD2 and fix for Hogwarts Legacy

Just like in Cyberpunk 2077, you can now shoot accurately from the comfort of your own car in Watch Dogs 2! (Or from the comfort of somebody else's car that you happened to steal, if you are so inclined).

Some of you noticed that aiming while driving was not working correctly in the previous release of the mod for WD2. There was a vertical offset between the crosshair and the point where your bullets ended up, and most importantly shooting in first person from a car was nearly impossibl...

Horizon Forbidden West and Atomic Heart fixed

Release 12.6.0 of the R.E.A.L. VR mod, attached below, fixes the two VR conversions that had been damaged from recent game updates.

Horizon Forbidden West: The latest official update, with support to AMD FSR 3.1, broke my patch to rescale the HUD, making the game basically unplayable in VR. It was an unexpectedly hard fix, but in the end I managed to make the HUD resizable again, and with the small added bonus that now you can control the horizontal and vertical sc...

More fixes for Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree

Release 12.5.0 of the R.E.A.L. VR mod, attached at the bottom, brings the following improvements to the Elden Ring + DLC experience:

HDR and washed-out colors: When Elden Ring is run on a system that includes one or more HDR monitors or TVs, and even if the HDR displays are all turned off and/or support for HDR is disabled both in Elden Ring and in Windows, the game will configure its internal buffers to render in HDR mode. Unfortunately it's impossible to convey in a flat video the sense of grandeur that you get from playing an exquisitely beautiful game like Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree in VR. In preparation for the upcoming DLC, which will unlock in about 5 hours after the time of this writing, FromSoftware has released an update to Elden Ring (game version 1.12, executable version 2.2.0.0).

The R.E.A.L. VR mod attached to this post (v12.4.0) restores full VR functionality to the updated version of Elden Ring, and hopefully will also work correctly with the DLC. We'll see about that in a short while.
