Lore Watch Episode 71: Talon’s reach, the dark purpose of undeath, and more

This week our Lore Watchers Anne, Matt, and Joe dive into the mailbag to answer your emails! First up, it’s an Overwatch question regarding Talon’s origins and continued motivations. Then the discussion turns to World of Warcraft and the Forsaken, the origins of Demon Hunters, the future of the Burning Legion, all with plenty of side tracking.

Watching Blizzard: It’s an Overwatch League weekend

It's not only the weekend: it's the end of Overwatch League Stage 2. There are three more matches on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. CDT with title matches to follow on Sunday — a change from Stage 1, when the final Saturday matches followed by the title matches made for a long gaming day.

And Friday wrapped up with the last match of the Stage for the Shanghai Dragons, who were completely stomped by the Londo...

Watching Blizzard: It's a red alert

Well, if not red, at least yellow. Let's jump right into the news.

Alert! Alert!

The drama doesn't stop for the Dallas Fuel

Watching Blizzard: A pirate's life for me

Really, all it took was one mention of Kul Tiras at BlizzCon and I was ready to start singing sea shanties while I ran off to join the nearest pirate crew. Who’s with me? Everyone, right? Soon we’ll have a whole pirate army!

While we wait to round up our pirate crew, let’s look at the news.

Watching Blizzard: Apparently I still haven't figured out time

I'm writing this at around 1 a.m., so it looks like my sense of "today" and "tomorrow" and anything in between is still kind of off. And though I thought palling around with Chromie would help, it might have just made it worse. Argh!

Oh well. It's another day (and then another day), so let's get on to the latest news. By which I mean yesterday's news, of course.

Watching Blizzard: Today is nearly tomorrow

I keep cutting it close on this today/tomorrow thing (depending on your time zone). But while it's still today (unless it's already tomorrow), let's look at today's (or yesterday's) news.

Got it?

Good.

The story of Rann Dawnbringer, Archmage of the Alliance

By Anne Stickney

This character profile has been written for Rann, one of our supporters. If you enjoy it, you can check out the other profiles we’ve written, too!

Rann Dawnbringer was never particularly good at choosing sides. Or more accurately, there were far more interesting things to concern herself with.

Watching Blizzard: Double the news, double the fun

Welcome back, loyal roundup readers. I missed you all yesterday because I accidentally fell asleep and decided it wasn't worth bothering with a roundup when I woke up either very early in the morning or very late at night, depending on your definition. So today I've brought my friend Chromie along to help me stay on time (or off time). We'll see how that goes.

Let's dive right into our two roundups in one.

Fenix is coming to Heroes of the Storm<...

Watching Blizzard: We are obsessed with Vulpera and you just have to deal with it

I’d say I’m sorry, but I’m really not. Vulpera are just so cute that I can’t wait to play one. The only flaw in that plan is that we don’t actually know if Vulpera will ever be playable. Blizzard has made no comment on the matter… but the Battle for Azeroth alpha keeps getting more Vulpera customizations and animations that many people are expecting them to become an Allied Race in the future.

Hopefully the immediate future.

But in the meanwhile, let’s look at toda...

Watching Blizzard: It was time for a (news) coffee break

So what happened today? Unfortunately, not much, especially after yesterday’s Hearthstoneexpansion announcement and all the rest. (And “the rest” adds up to an awful lot.) But who knows: maybe Wednesday will be so busy that we’ll look back on this quiet Tuesday with nostalgia.

But even on a slow news day, the Battle for Azeroth alpha marches on, and there’s alwa...

Watching Blizzard: Spoooooky!

It's not really spooky unless you at least triple the number of O's in the word. I had a long internal debate over using "spooooooky" in the headline for today's Hearthstone expansion announcement, but finally decided it wouldn't be professional. But now I'm thinking I'm not all that professional anyway.

A note on the header image before we begin. I typed "spooky" into our image search and the first thing that popped up was the upside-down sinners in the Karazhan Crypts. I wa...

Watching Blizzard: How fabulous is this?

Even if you aren't stylish by nature, the Trial of Style has given all of us an opportunity to take the stage with our best transmog looks. It's been a fun, transmog filled week where we could all feel just a bit more fabulous. But everything ends eventually, and the Trial of Style is on its way out already — which means next week, we'll need to find new ways to feel fabulous.

I suppose we have the wee...

Watching Blizzard: I’m afraid to look

I was out of the house during Thursday's Overwatch League matches, and frankly I'm too scared to look at the results. If I never look, I can always imagine that Shanghai pulled off a win. But... I'm tempted. So tempted. I want to know.

Okay. I made the mistake of looking, so now I know it was another 4-0 lockout for my favorite underdogs. One day, precious Dragons, you will fly. But today was not the...

Watching Blizzard: Yes, I'm still cheering for the Dragons

It's really no surprise to anyone that the Shanghai Dragons opened up this week in Overwatch League with a loss (especially since they were playing the Seoul Dynasty). On top of their solid losing streak, they lost their coach and Diya left for China due to a family eme...

Are rewards in WoW rewarding enough?

By Anne Stickney

Recently, Blizzard issued a hotfix that changed the cost of Argus missions that reward Blood of Sargeras. Here’s the long and short of it: players can trade in Blood of Sargeras for Order Hall Resources. The mission originally cost 1800 Resources to do. If the mission was completed successfully with the bonus loot, you could take th...

Watching Blizzard: I’m going to keep cheering on the Dragons

Have I used that headline before? It feels that I've used that headline before... but it's still true. As of today, the Shanghai Dragons are missing a coach and their four newest recruits still haven't arrived in the country due to visa issues. However, I'm going to keep cheering for my favorite underdogs. It has to work out one day, right? Right.

Let's do the news, starting with our favorite Overwatch League team.

Watching Blizzard: Is it Friday yet?

Dang, it's been a long week. Isn't it Friday yet? No? Well it has to be Thursday at least, right? No? It's Monday? How can it still be Monday?

In which Liz has just run the longest chain of Mythic+ attempts ever and would already like this week to be over but apparently it isn't.

Okay then, let's just get down to the day's news. Then at least Monday will be over and we can move on to Tuesday.

Watching Blizzard: Rooting for the underdogs

My beloved Overwatch League underdogs, the Shanghai Dragons, are back on stage tomorrow facing off against the San Francisco Shock. They're doomed, but I'm trying very hard to hold on to hope. It's not working, but I am trying.

But since I can't do anything besides wave my tiny Dragons flag, let's move on to something I can do: the news.

Watching Blizzard: It’s still February, right?

After the past couple of days of all news all the time, today’s been kind of slow. The most exciting news of the day is a vaguely defined Hearthstone bug that’s delayed the start of the new season. My advice, Hearthstone team, is to pretend it’s a leap year which would make today February 29 — then the season starting tomorrow would be totally normal and on time. No one would notice the difference. You’ve totally got this!

Well, now that we’ve all determined that ...

Watching Blizzard: Still waiting for that t-shirt...

As I am writing this, the Shanghai Dragons are taking on the Los Angeles Gladiators in the last Overwatch League match of the night. Will this finally be the day they take home a win? Come on, Dragons, you can do it!

So far it looks like no, they can't do it, but the match is just beginning. They could turn it around any minute now. Any minute... annnnnyyyyy minute...

Or maybe not. Oh well, let's get on to the news.

She's finally here!

How Blizzard could make tanking more engaging in Battle for Azeroth

Legion was a fantastic expansion in many ways, but as I look back over the raid fights as a main tank, I can't help but notice the developers have fallen into a rut with the design of tank encounters. With few exceptions, tanking every fight is about taunting the boss when the other tank gets a set number of debuff stacks. Sometimes the debuffed tank has to run away, but there's little variation. Two fights in Antorus — Aggramar and Varimathras — add an element of a dance, but even ...

Watching Blizzard: Slow news day? Ha!

Yesterday felt like a busy day (it was a Monday, after all), but today managed to be busier. We had an Overwatch patch, WoW hotfixes (featuring more good doggos), a Battle for Azerothupdate (featuring dinosaurs), and the announcement of a new Hearthstone Year. And that’s not even all!

If you’re struggling to keep up, that’s okay, because so are we. Here’s the rundown of everything that happened today.

Watching Blizzard: All announcements all the time

It’s been a busy day in the Nexus (and also outside the Nexus) with a pile of Heroes of the Stormnews this afternoon… but the rest of Blizzard’s lineup isn’t to be left out, with updates from Overwatch, WoW, and even Diablo. With all of that waiting to be unveiled, what are we all still doing here in the introduction? Let’s check out what happened on Monday.
