Masterclass - UK Bass Sound Design Deep Dive

hi all,

in this class I freestyle making some common UK bass inspired sound design. we discuss:

  • basic technique of manipulating 808s with FM

  • advanced post processing

  • Wavefolding

  • Convolution

  • "working backwards" in Sound Design to achieve complex sounds easily

and much more.

This is exactly my process for building sounds, and I didn't plan anything so I could talk you through my mindset and th...

Mastering + Metering in 2024

hi all

thx for your patience last few weeks, content train begins rolling again today

this is some redundant information for some parts as it's still the same workflow as it was a year ago, but i've got some new tricks up my sleeve, and there's a bunch of explanation on minimeters. so consider this an updated mastering video.

that said i get asked these Qs so much i had to address them again for new patreons.

here's cliff notes:

  • sidechain...

LSS Transition Rack

Hey all,

Easy little rack I made to help streamline build-ups. I know there's many of these out there, but the advantage to this is you can "program it" quickly and easily to do what you want.

Often times I find the other racks out there just aren't exactly what I want - maybe the preset is good but it filters too much, or too little compared to the reverb. Sometimes the reverb tone isn't what I want, or too much. This allows you to quickly change all of that and still keep ONE...

Producer Masterclass - Arrangement + Patterns

hi,

different style video today that I hope helps level up your songwriting and opens up your mind to more possibilities when creating. it's a bit more of a discussion than technical nerdery on a synth or compressor...and I hope i did a great job expressing my concepts.

we discuss:

  • arrangement, what is it and why should you care?

  • the concept of 'macro and micro' arrangement in electronic music - patterns vs arrangement

  • avoiding predicta...

hi all,

back again with another video :) thanks for ur support and patience.

this video is about making Serum come to life through using modulators a lot of people sleep on. we emulate the analog pitch drift, but take it to an extreme and apply it to various parts of Serum to create really interesting sonic texture and results.

LSS 2024 ABLETON TEMPLATE

by request here's my ableton template.  some notes:

- sidechain is pre-routed from the kick/clap.  make sure to route from the operator linked to the kick., pre-FX.  the utility afterwards is to prevent clicks from operator coming through.  feel free to disable the clap sidechain.  you do have to adjust the release - it's set as short as possible by default to encourage tweaking.

- you probably won't have wave candy, it's an old FL studio metering.  r...

VIDEO Q&A part 5 - Time Management w/ producing music

my biggest workflow tips are too much for one video but i'll say a few things that help me on this same path

  • set realistic goals and deadlines for yourself.  for me, one solid "near final" demo thats roughly mixed per week is a normal goal while maintaining 9-5 and a laughably small social life
  • the most expensive word in the american language is
"NOW" - people sacrifice long term wins for short term satisfaction.  i can't promise you that you...

VIDEO Q&A part 3 - Drum Basics

programming, sound selection, processing, and mixing of your drums

  • my starting point is identifying what the best groove is going to be for the record.  i'll usually start a project with basic drum loops and idenfity what the right "groove" is for the record
  • i work with a mix of MIDI and loops.  MIDI offers me control with a lack of groove, and audio gives me soul, but with less control.  MIDI tends to be all one shots.  Track delay is...

VIDEO Q&A part 2 - Mixing Kick + Bass

another Q in a previous comment on mixing kick/bass and how i approach it

  • i don't compress or process the kick/bass together, i prefer to just have well chosen elements, and i like to manipulate them to get along.  i use kick2 for control, samples are fine but i preference going the"hard" route in exchange for more control.  more control also means more room for error, though.
  • tuning, timing, and phase are the three rules of a good foundation for kick/bass

VIDEO Q&A part 1 - Drop Patterns & Arrangement

hi all,

5 parts, over an hour and a half of footage coming.

this part is on drop patterns and how i sequence sounds to create interesting drops that are the perfect balance between repetition and interest.

  • A B A C pattern, A B A B pattern
  • reference a few LSS songs
  • my approach is to get a few exciting bits in play, write and then boil it down to the best.  chopping samples leads me to where i have to fill the gaps in.
  • if you're really stu...

LSS QUICK TIP: PHASE COHESION + MIXING KICK/SUB

hello,

one of the issues with playing different notes w/ your sub basses is dealing with phase and the relationship of how your kick drum will interact with your sub bass.

if you tune your kick to a D, for example, you'll be fine when you play a D sub in most cases - but when you switch that sub note to an F - you're going to see bow-ties in your metering.  this means you're pushing out less energy to the speakers, and means your mix isn't going to hit as hard as it could - y...

PRODUCER MASTERCLASS - Timer Beats / Time Batching

alright so when i recorded this video earlier i made two beats and the mic wasn't working SO i re-did it a little more warmed up.

the concept here is TIMER BEATS / time batching.  you're going to spend as much time as your brain allows yourself to spend on one task - and that can mean less efficiency.   so here, we're going to try to put ourselves under extremely short deadlines - 5 minutes per "interval" and force ourselves to make a record in 40 minutes.

this tech...

DJ MASTERCLASS - Rekordbox organization + planning show/festival sets

hi all,

more DJ content is on the way - any suggestions for what you'd like to see, drop it below!

this video gives a good overview on how I plan my sets and organize my rekordbox for the best possible DJ sets.  don't overplan, but always go in prepared!  you don't wanna be buried in the gear looking for the right tune all night.

they say the best DJs see the room a way regular people can't see - and bad DJs just see themselves.  even though sometimes on IG it...

new vocal chop technique - you can see it in action here:

Production Quick Tip: Groove / Swing

hi all,

trying to get better on throwing "record" on when I do something that might be interesting to you all.

super quick tip here on grooves/swing.  it's sometimes tough to differentiate from all of the options in "swing" - so here's a quick tip.  slow down your project down 30-40%, and now the pockets of swing are much more emphasized.

this is also a great way to get percussion/things off grid and feel confident they are really "in the pocket" - once you ...
