Visual Novel Content/Gameplay

Hey everyone!

With Changeling released, we are going to be focusing on finishing up our Kickstarter rewards so we can hopefully begin a new journey with a new project.

Of course, there's a lot that has to happen before we really start working on a new project but we are giving some thought to it even now. And one of the things we're thinking about is how to make it even better than Changeling.

For instance, increasing the interactive capacity of the game through additional features and gameplay elements. We're contemplating a lot of different ideas right now but we're really curious what people like to see in visual novels.

#Do you like pure, unadulterated visual novels with no real gameplay elements beyond collecting scenes and CGS?

#Do you like the added tension of timed choices (such as in The Walking Dead?)

#What about quick time events of the sort found in The Letter, or even Detroit Become Human?

#We are not interested in making any kind of stat raising game, but we were contemplating an element that allows you set certain personality traits early on in the game, which would then impact the content you unlock later in the game, or how certain story elements play out.

For instance (a very simple example) - if your personality is more knowledge/intelligence oriented when a specific character quotes an obscure piece of literature to you, the MC would automatically get the reference. Where a character not knowledge/intelligence oriented might either have to look it up, or simply wouldn't care.

#What about having some choices options locked for you (or unlocked) specifically because of choices you've made prior. We used this element somewhat in Changeling, but were thinking of expanding on this idea to be more obvious and more relevant in Endgame.

#Are there any other features that you think would be interesting to see? Point and click elements like interactive BGs? Something else?

Please let us know. Endgame is still very much in the planning stages so the possibilities are pretty much wide open and we really do want to raise our work to the next level for our next project. Changeling was pretty safe as a pure Visual Novel. It would be fun to spread our wings and get creative with Endgame (without going too crazy!)

I feel like the way TWD does it isn't very effective because there's a timer on every single choice, even if it's something trivial. And in real life, you don't have a split second for every single decision. I feel like it creates more fatigue than actual tension, where using only on critical decisions that really would need to be made quickly could make those decisions more engaging. OwO

Steamberry Studio

Oh okay I see! I could see that being very effective in those moments!

Tomey

Ha ha - that's a good point! No one wants to spend their precious seconds reading the choice instead of choosing! XD

Steamberry Studio

If we did timed choices, it would be done sparingly rather than every single time like TWD. I was thinking more for, say...in Changeling the times where someone is behind you and you can choose to look or not look. Or in the woods when you can choose to run, fight, or hide. Basically situations where you'd have to do a split choice in real life too. And we'd always make sure that, at the very least, you could open the game menu and pause the timer.

Steamberry Studio

I like the interactive background idea too! Personally I don’t like timed choices because they make me anxious lol but I’ve seen them used effectively before. And I really like the idea of personality playing a part too!

Tomey

I like the idea of an interactive background, and for any timed things, I prefer of the text to read it is short so I can have at least a few seconds to deliberate! XD

Alison Bradley

Yeah, I also think adding some kind of point and click elements might be interesting. But obviously it's much more involved than just writing a story when you consider interactive background elements and the like.

Steamberry Studio

Yeah, that is my concern with them. And I'm not sure how many people find them fun versus just...annoying.

Steamberry Studio

I like the interactive BGs idea, would be pretty neat to see something like that. Maybe something like hidden objects minigame?

While I'm not opposed to the idea of QTEs or timed choices, if implemented there needs to be a way to turn them off for accessibility reasons, I think. Not everyone has fast enough reflexes for QTEs. But I'd certainly be intrigued by how they could be done in the game!
