Reacting to Heartstopper Season 2 - Episode 4 "Challenge"

Good morning beautiful people,

We are back today, very appropriately as I sit here on the Euro Star to Paris, with Episode 4 of Heartstopper Season 2!

This show is getting me even more than I thought it would and I am thrilled to be finally experiencing our favourite people in Paris... and keep an eye out for my very own Paris content too over the next couple of days.

See you in the comments!

Love, always ♥️

Reacting to Heartstopper Season 2 - Episode 4 "Challenge"

Comments

That ending was peeeerfect

Meladrix

Frances - I'm guessing that the film crew may have removed the padlock as soon as filming was complete. It would have been nice to see it there though, but it would be a very pleasant surprise to see it still in place.

Has anyone else noticed that there are some very good looking extras in Heartstopper? For example, have a look at the guy sitting by the window behind and to the right of Mr. Farouk at the 09:40 to the 09:50 mark above.

the answer to the question of whether it was good French. the sentence structure was not 100% right but, for nick's character was it okay.because his character speaks that as a second language and he barely speaks french in his daily life. so for me this was very realistic French . but nicely done from kit connor for speaking french is not an easy language to learn or speak.

I watched and enjoyed this the other day when you originally posted Jackie. Clearly I neglected to comment. You must be having an amazing time in Paris making beautiful photos. Selfishly, I’m patiently looking forward to when you’re back and settled because episode 5 is my favorite (of course I love the whole season. ) I’ll explain why when the time comes.

Fair points.

My favorite Imogen line from this season kind of slips through the background, but as she describes her mandatory 7 step skin care routine to be fresh “in the most Instagrammable city in the world,” she says “blame the patriarchy!” I love it. She’s such an adorable mix between progressivism and naïveté, and when you throw in those impossibly blue eyes, she makes it hard to breathe!

Her observation of his obsession with Charlie doesn’t mean she put the pieces together that Ben’s bi or gay. You can’t out someone if you don’t know the person’s sexuality. Imogene was simply hurt by his selfish behavior. I strongly disagree with the view that outing is never okay. Maybe it’s because I came of age in the 80s and 90s watching my friends and contemporaries get sick and die while closeted officials did nothing or actively worked against our interests. When people act maliciously, outing is not only acceptable but necessary to counteract the harm they inflict. Representative Barney Frank got it right when he said, "I think there's a right to privacy. But the right to privacy should not be a right to hypocrisy. And people who want to demonize other people shouldn't then be able to go home and close the door and do it themselves."

Mark Edwards

I’m still not sure. She knew that Charlie wasn’t straight by this time and she observed Ben being, as she put it, ‘obsessed’ with him, resentfully having watched him staring at both Charlie and Nick during earlier scenes in Paris, so I just wonder if she was instinctively figuring out the truth even before the rest room scene.

Graham & Ruth May

Agree with your last point, certainly. I do think, judging by Charlie’s facial expression during the scene at the table that it brought past trauma to the surface again, though.

I’ve been on the fence about whether Imogen really did out Ben or not. On the one hand, she brought Charlie into the discussion, which would have been surprising or confusing for everyone else (since only Nick knows about them). But I’m also kind of leaning towards the belief that the other kids just thought Ben might be obsessed with Charlie because he wants to bully him. Given what we know about the bullying in the past, that Harry was a big instigator in picking on Charlie in S1, and Ben is friends with Harry, one could say the other kids assumed Ben was too busy focusing on picking on Charlie to be a good boyfriend to Imogen. Either way, I think it’s a good depiction of how teenagers don’t necessarily have the foresight to see what the ramifications of their words could be.

Charlie

The difficulty with these coming out at midnight where I live is that by the time I am up and about and watching it, everyone else has already seen and commented. So there’s not a whole lot I can say that others haven’t already said. I do love your reactions and especially enjoy when you can make a personal connection to the show. And as far as the idea of Imogen having outed Ben, I don’t think she’s really made the connection that Ben might have had a relationship with Charlie, just that he seems to be paying more attention to him than to her. People might put two and two together and figure out that Ben is not as straight as he pretends, but I don’t think it’s until she is talking with Charlie and Nick in the restroom that it occurs to her that something might’ve actually been going on between Charlie and Ben.

Lane Wright

Another reaction channel I watch is a young French man who has English subtitles. He said that Kit’s French was very good. A bit of an accent but overall spot on. My French is appalling so I’ll take his word for it.

Kurt Anderson

I wonder if you will find the Charlie+Tao padlock ♥️☺️

Have a great time in Paris! Can't wait to hear about it. As for this episode, it was just so well done. The whole Paris trip was *chefs kiss*. Balanced some of the issues experienced by the characters so well with the joy from the trip. So many cute and meaningful moments paired with exploring some really emotionally difficult discussions and/or discoveries.

I think based on her reaction to her jumping in and saying “is it about you and Charlie?” And then realizing that she should have let him tell her, I think she knows that it’s not OK too or anyone BUT there are clear insecurities in her regarding her lack of friends. She felt like Ben actually liked her and even though she’s been supportive of Nick and Charlie, I’m sure that the teenage, insecure part of her was like “OMG not again!” I don’t think she meant to out him and based on the fact that no one really said anything to Ben, she didn’t out him really. He’s always made a big thing about not knowing him or barely knowing him, he’s never even tried to be close to him when other people are around and she only noticed that he was looking at him because she’s dating him and he was being distant. So as far as everyone seems to be concerned, he’s still the same guy he’s always been but he was a jerk to Imogen.

Laura Ibarra

This is definitely one of my favourite episodes from season 2. Some very important conversations, between Tao and Nick and between Charlie and Tara. But the conversation that doesn’t take place, between Tara and Darcy, feels really present and looms over their relationship. Also, Kit’s bulking up has the effect of making Charlie look not just smaller, but much more physically frail and vulnerable by comparison with Nick. I am a confirmed member of the Ben Hope Hate Club, but I read a comment elsewhere that whatever we might think about Ben’s character, it’s not cool that by saying what she did, Imogen basically outed Ben and implicated Charlie. I must admit that while I was watching the episode for the first time, I wasn’t thinking about that, but now that I am, I have to agree that it’s never ok to out anyone and also, Imogen could have dumped Ben without bringing Charlie into it. In her defence, she’s a teenage girl who is beginning to look like quite a vulnerable character, unsure of whether people actually like her and a bit adrift on the fringes of a tight-knit and already established friendship group.

Cannot wait. I'm so jealous
