Frieren agrees to teach Fern some magic while she spends a few years deciphering a grimoire that could contain a spell for immortality... but what she doesn't know, is that this was just a way for Heiter to keep her around so she could make a true mage out of Fern. Enough so that when he dies, the two of them can travel together! After the death of their friend, the two companions set on a journey to gather more spells, however mundane they may be ;)

As someone in the youtube video for the first episode already mentioned. Fern means distant or far away. :)
