First Listen to Heilung-'Anoana'

Wow, what an amazing world they have created. It's a wild mysterious place to be, very interesting sound and visuals!

Shout out to Jamie W. for sponsoring this reaction to put it on my radar.

The lyrics to this song come from ancient roman coins and the words that were found engraved on them! Even they are not 100% sure what the words mean

I'm glad other people were able to provide you some answers, Tim. Someone had mentioned Heilung wants their music to be healing, and in fact, Heilung means "healing" in German. They want to leave people in a relaxed, meditative state by the end of the show, even if some of the songs are more chaotic and primal. Not only do they get inspiration for their music from ancient writing and carvings, they also use Roman accounts of Germanic peoples as the basis for their clothing and instruments. The instruments they make are from materials Iron Age, Bronze Age, and Medieval people would have had access to. However, it's not just limited to Northern Europe as they also use traditional instruments from the Indian region and other areas as well. They also record a lot of natural sounds. The three core members, Maria, Chris, and Kai, often walk around with recorders to just gather natural sounds while they're out and about and then incorporate those into the production. They sing in a number of languages, including Latin, English, German, and Icelandic but through their historical research have also learned bits and pieces some old languages like Gothic, Old High German, Proto-Germanic, and Old Norse. Maria, in her interview with Elizabeth at the Charasmatic Voice, me ruined that a lot of the vocal tracks on the albums come from a single take, often the first one. They want to capture an organic performance, including ad libs and improvisations that may come to them when they first sing with the music. They don't want something that's been rehearsed and doctored over and over. I hope you get a chance to explore their music more. What would be great is to see them live. I doubt they'd ever come to Raleigh, NC for me to see them, but they may tour up in the NYC and Philly area for you to check out. Thanks for the great reaction!
