Time for my usual background information on the piece. Ruin Your Night first appeared on TikTok, posted from an account with no real history, basically a blind account that was seemingly made for just dropping it. From there it was copied over to Twitter and YouTube by the usual community hubs that follow Chappell and her works. It produced a lot of discussion, and community reaction was quite positive. Most of the people that replied stated that they really liked the way the piece felt different in a modern way, while still being very true to Chappell's writing voice. It was also noted that in one of Chappell's interviews from about half a year back, 'Who's your Daddy" if I'm not mistaken, Chappell related a story of how one night she was out as a club, and encountered her Ex there, who was hitting upon another young woman. She related that she ended up seducing the woman away from them, and ruining their Ex's night. She admitted that it was petty behavior on her part, but also oh so satisfying. So many of us in the Chappell community feel that the song was based off of this really event. That makes the song a sister to "My Kink is Karma" in spirit. A side of Chappell's writing that we don't see very often. The vengeful Chappell, who when wronged is quite wrathful, and revenge minded. Traits that she herself has said are toxic, but part of who she is. And like the honesty about herself that is so very much a part of her other music she freely exposes in Kink, and this piece. Those of us that have a feel for when specific works in Chappell's discography are from feel that Ruin Your Night came from the late 2023 writing binge that included Read & Make Out, Cowboy and the Subway. It shares production qualities with those songs, and a level of growth in Chappell's skill with scores and structure that is unique to that point in time. Anyhow, about five days after the song appeared and spread it was struck down everyplace on the web from X to TikTok to YouTube all at once via a copyright strike. This has never happened to any of Chappell's leaks over the last year, even pieces that are of similar vintage and quality. They are all still up on the web, and can be found and listened to. What it did resemble was what happened to the SNL Giver performance clip that SNL posted after that live performance, which got struck down in less than 12 hours after it was posted. Incidentally it's why I grab copies of anything that pops up immediately for my own archive. :) But the Giver was struck down because at the point that Chappell did it on SNL, it had yet to have been filed for ASCAP protection. And that exposed it to a lot of potential legal issues and so forth, so the table quickly acted and struck it. Chappell seems to just decide to do things on her own schedule, and doesn't pay attention to all the lawyerly niceties it seems. Which is what her SNL premier of the Giver very much was. She wanted to do it, and did. Leaving the table to scramble in her wake. I sort of approve. It's very much in line with the sort of Artist she is. She also is personally responsible for many of the leaks we've seen previously. She plays them on her live streams, and once she gave the URL to a personal Soundcloud that had demo versions of most of CR1 and other unreleased things that of course all got copied. Many of us think that Ruin your Night was leaked by her or someone very close to her with her knowledge and approval for whatever Chappell reason there was. She seems to like to see what people think of her stuff to get a new perspective on the work, which may be part of her process. But of course we don't know for sure. So is this a "No-No" to have? Yes, on the same level that having a copy of the Giver was right after the SNL performance back in November of '24. It's not going to be allowed to stand on the web in a public way. But here on Patreon it's safe to share bubbled. And any copies made would include Tim's commentary also so not much risk here. But that it was struck so fast and hard indicates that there may well be more up with this piece then others. Possibly that it's slated for CR2 placement, or perhaps a single in the next months in advance of that album much like the Giver is. Pure speculation, that we'll find out about as the year progresses and CR2 eventually comes. End of wordy history lesson! I'm 100% in agreement with Tim in that this is a very contemporary piece from Chappell, which could have easily fit on CR1 and is in her modern voice. It has the subtle sexual aspects, her story based song structure, and her wonderful chest/head voice switching. It's pretty new for sure. It's also not finished clearly. At 2:40 it's short, and it has no bridge, and probably closing verse/outro. What it does have is another super sticky chorus delivered in that playground cadence that makes it stick so easily. "I'm always so nice, I'm concise..." etc is just effective in a way that is unexpected in that cadence. It's superior song writing in my opinion. One of the other folks I chat with in the community pointed out that Ruin your Night shares a lot in common with Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark "If You Leave" form the Pretty in Pink Soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPmTGFg06zA Especially the drum line. But the cadences in the lyrics are very very similar also. Now, the fact, that Chappell will reference things from previous musical periods is nothing new. We've seen it a lot. But in this case there is an added bit, it makes Ruin your Night resonate with the John Hughes soundtrack genre. Which is a very very specific bit of musical history of the 80's. And it evokes a specific feeling also. It wouldn't surprise me to find that Chappell was inspired directly or indirectly from the Hughes films, whose main story beats were about young outcast women finding their power and self in what made them outcast. Something I thinks she'd resonate with a good deal. I bet if a new Hughes film was made today there would be a Chappell Roan song on its soundtrack :) But Ruin your Night has a lot of 80's feels in it. Especially from the New Romantic period. I do hope this gets development and appears on CR2. It's a strong piece.
