This is indeed very 80's production styled. It could have easily come from Janet Jackson back then. It's fully in the mold of that modern R&B style that started in the 80's and has expanded out ever since. As Doja has matured as an artist she's seemed to have moved past the 'proving herself' phase of her career, and has moved on to doing what she wants more deeply. Which I feel is an integrated form of rap-lyrical fusion that is both fresh and carries a nostalgia feel. As you said the production on this track is immaculate and very solidly done. It supports what I feel is the mood and intent of the project that is coming. The video is also well designed, and it has echos of 1980's exercise video aspects in it. Minus the rap bridge this song could well play in gyms of the 80's as leotard clad folks worked out. And Doja has long made use of her body as part of her sales profile, catering to the male gaze, which she knows oh so well from her previous career. But she is always the empowered person in such transactions, which is also her brand too. This will do well in clubs, and it will get radio play also I wager. This was fun.
