Time Team recently spent several years researching the stunning Medieval town of Dunster in Somerset for our ‘Dig Village’ project. We enlisted the expertise of buildings archaeologist and illustrator, Dr Richard Parker, who helped us strip back the layers of history and find some of the earliest buildings in the town. Many of the houses turned out to be hundreds of years older than originally thought, with ancient structures hidden behind more recent facades.
In this video, community archaeologist Dani Wootton catches up with Richard to discover more about his role and share memories of their time crawling through the attics of Dunster. Richard gives us a unique window into his craft and shares his insights on the importance of reconstruction drawings in helping to bring the past alive.
Favourite anecdote of the interview? Ours has to be Richard’s description of “an absolutely banging cloister!”
