S22 | Knights Hospitaller (Halston): Saxon Font - 3D model

Wow, what a response to Day 1 of our Knights Hospitaller dig! Remember, it's your support that directly makes this all possible, so thank you again for helping us to uncover more history.

The dig got off to a great start, with Richard K Morriss identifying a Saxon font that might be over a thousand years old! It predates the Hospitallers, of course, but what an incredible find for Gus's virtual museum.

View the model on Sketchfab HERE.

There's plenty more still to come, so get ready for Day 2 HERE.

Comments

You can see traces of decoration in a band round the top.

Mary Jones

Could it have been outside for a long time? It seems like it should be decorated, but any decorations have been worn off.

Jeff Lanam

I love seeing the 3D models. It really gives viewers a sense of the objects / artifacts when we're so distant from the actual dig site. <3

Kay Theriault

Hello, yes wonderful find! Do they normally have hole in the bottom? These does'nt seem to be any patterning on the font, are there any signs of painted decoration?

Lydia S.

Times New Saxon. We'll see ourselves out.

No ser(i)fs ... ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I'll see myself out, also. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Martin Packer

I'm pretty sure that's a sans-serif font. I'll see myself out.

Christopher Samuel

Great find, but can we know what the stain is? Is the hole in the bottom for drainage or an attachment to the base? What stone is it made from -- sandstone?

Diana Patterson

That is a font to die for. And as for the medieval tile, phwoaaarh!
