S22 | Knights Hospitaller: Aftershow Live Session (unedited replay)

Thanks to everyone who joined us for yesterday's live session with the team. For those who couldn't make it, or simply wish to watch again, here's a completely unedited live replay of the session.

This was our first session trialing Zoom's webinar rather than Crowdcast, so please do let us know how you found the experience of this platform and how easy it was to access the session.

The Time Team excitement continues with some impending announcements on this year's activities. Watch this space for more details...

Greetings from Rhodes, 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼 where a TT fan is trying to connect what they learned from your Halston dig with what remains of the Hospitallers on this gorgeous isle. First aha moment: Fighting in armor in this heat? 😯 Scary.

Tracey J Evans

There was water management here, to the North are Mediaeval fish ponds but these were cleaned out in the 1970's by the well meaning farmer. There is a drawing regarding the location of a water mill but its accuracy is doubted. The local historian conducted field searches centred on what was known as Windmill Hill with little result, later making a cursory search I found a piece of Mediaeval porringer and some stone roof tiles. I ma no longer in the area and have concentrated on the local history of whare I live, I have visited the Peleponese and was present when some important finds were made in Ancient Messinia, North of Kalamata. During my searches I was helped by the County Archaeologist and Richard Brunning, he of episode two - Red Lake. And stimulating my interest the much loved and missed Robin Bush who had the patience of a saint while I had my two year old daughter with me!

Sorry, I am late to the party. I am the author of Somerest HER 43225 reference 10 and 11, the Preceptory of the Order of St John of Jerusalem at Mynchin Buckland, Durston Somerset. This Preceptory doesn't fall into the layout as described in the program. I conducted my survey for a one year A-Level exam in Archaeology as a mature student. The precptory was established as part of a ruling by Henry II bringing itinerent monks of the order together into establishments. The Order took over an existing Augustin priory. There were two establishments on the site one Male and the other Female. My survey was very restricted but I believe I found that the barn was the chapel and the farmyard, which I believe was a model farm from about 1750, was built on the cloister. the second establishmant has long disappeared probably due to the masonary being sold off in 1790 but evidence could be under the field to the east of the barn, my suspicions are due to a strangely laid out Ha-Ha which seems to serve little purpose. There is evidence of elaborate carving and structure for the chapel due to the amount of carved stone work found in local walls and excavated during farming. Unreported in my report is a piece of brick I found in the 1180 section of stone wall in the barn. A chance conversation with a farmer a little along the range of hills suggests that there is an undiscovered Roman Villa not far to the west of the Preceptory site.

Me too, I’m in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, QLD 😀

On another note I LOVED Helen’s comment about saying hello to the ancestors in the crypt! That’s exactly how I think of it too. As an historian, I’ve come home from cemeteries feeling like I’ve made a bunch of new friends. Wonderful stuff.

Bron Lloyd

Yep me too! Good to see some more Patreons in SA :)

Bron Lloyd

Couldn’t watch live in South Australia as in beddy byes, but thoroughly enjoyed the replay - thanks! Zoom is OK but I miss seeing everyone’s faces during the whole discussion rather than just the person talking. it’s fun seeing reactions :). Think that can be rectified on settings?

Bron Lloyd

Another South Aussie here :)

Bron Lloyd

Loved this - thank you!

choklityum

Thank you, TT, for continuing to bring us continuing supplementary content! I know I speak for many who feel we have a genuine connection to our TT “friends” old and new. I wonder how many are in either a John or Stewart camp! Perhaps most simply enjoy their ongoing cheerful tussle. Just one more reason to enjoy both the archaeology and the endearing personalities. A perfect combo. And Happy Easter, all!

Doug Mackey

As a new commer to this, it was fantastic to see you all give your time to continue to educate and inform, I love the fact that Helen talks about Prof Ashton so fondly, I am sure his stripyness would love that people here still support your work and follow you for our education

Neil Graham

Happy Easter TT it was easy to access, great to watch and make comments throughout. And as said - many questions left unanswered so a return necessary.

Sue Tweedie

Great and I agree with everyone, if we find nothing its still, good archaeology, Great TV

P H Woodward

sadly, i couldn't be at the live, so thanks so much for uploading the recording!

doobat

This was great!

Diane Spears

LOVED this and yes go back to the site, there is so much more to uncover...

Brett

I wasn't able to join the live session due to jury duty so I enjoyed the replay, which played well. It was good to see everyone there and to hear the interesting information they had to share. Good humor, too.

Connie L Merchant

I wasn't able to join the Live Session like Kerry I also live in South Australia so 3.30am was out of the question!!! Have however thoroughly have enjoyed watching it tonight. It was absolutely brilliant. Keep up the good work everyone, and I can't wait to see what you do next!!!!!

Helen L Robinson

it's delightful to see everyone so happy

Elizabeth Neill

would like to hail the Time Team owls -- great job

Elizabeth Neill

Pleased to be able to watch this at my leisure rather than at 4am live. One of the disadvantages of living in Australia. Kerry must live in South Australia

David Boon

Thanks so much...the 3.30 am timeslot here in Oz is not conducive to my beauty sleep 😁 so I really appreciate being able to watch a recording of the event 👍

Kerry Hennigan

As the Upstart Crow might have said, “To be (a preceptory), or not to be (a preceptory.) That is the question”🐦‍⬛ Thanks so much, this was great to watch!

Eggs Ackley

Cool! My wife is a program manager at NREL in support of DOE

Stitch

Could you be thinking of TikTok? Zoom is a US company and runs dedicated services for USG, as you can see from this GSA document on how to use it: https://handbook.tts.gsa.gov/tools/zoom/ - I'm at a DoE lab and we use Zoom all the time.

Christopher Samuel

I really enjoy these unedited replays and it worked perfectly for me. 🙌 I vote YES to an expedition crew revisiting. A HUGE thank you to all TT Crew and all the Patrons who continue to ask amazing questions. Bear... you rock digital reconstruction🥇 I can't wait... Cheers! 🍻

Patricia Amero

Anthony, I have to disagree. You are probably referring to the incident regarding Xinjiang Jin, who was an employee of Zoom but was terminated for his association with CCP and his activities in support of CCP messaging. Zoom, Teams and WebX are all used by various US agencies still, based on my association with DOD and my lovely wife’s association with DOE.

Stitch

Never used Zoom before and it seemed to work fine for a man with a boomer background.

Stitch

Zoom is by far my preferred option for this sort of activity. It’s really wonderful to be able to interact with everyone and contribute to the discussion. Many thanks to all.

JUDITH COOKE

Anthony Cavinaw

I am familiar with accessing zoom, so that would be my preference.

Kate

Couldn't see the original one..sessions popped up! Glad to be seeing it now.

Don Cook

Special . Thank you Time Team Really enjoyed the session with you .

PHILIP MAY

I use zoom for all lectures and courses except for the BAA who broadcast live on YouTube. Brilliant sound, visuals and connection. I couldn't be happier.

Valerie Aston

I didn't get to see it live, I don't have zoom and I was at work anyway. Sorry, no scotch, how about rum and red bull.

Alan Murdock

That was great !

Sarah Holloway

It was amazing to be able to interact with everyone!

Mark Freestone

Accustom to Zoom so perfect for me at my desktop. Advice to TT crew, sit still in front of the camera and mic. Pixels and voice distortion from movement.

Ann H

Wished I could have joined the live version, but was on a plane mid-Atlantic at the time.

Richard Abbott

Thank you!

Ben Matthews

It seemed to work OK with just the intermittent freeze for me. I thought it was very worthwhile and successful.

Roger Mills

Very easy to listen to. Good that so many questions were asked! I was absolutely I'm my element, loved it

Michael Taylor

I found it easy, very interesting listening to the gang 😊
