Rendering Improvements: Adding Clothing Patterns

The character title work is all done and implemented throughout LR2. The changes will be nice for writing new dialogue and scenes, and as an added bonus all menus throughout the game can now make use of the formatted names for characters. It's making the popup window that's normally in the bottom right look pretty slick for relatively little work.

With that done I've been able to move onto some other work. I just have a quick progress update on it tonight because I'm hoping to have a bunch of demo pictures and full technical explanation for tomorrow. Currently clothing items in Lab Rats 2 are rendered in Daz, tinted in Renpy, and then displayed. This works well but the system only works well for monochromatic clothing. I am now working on both enhancements to my rendering automation and changes to the internal display code for LR2 that will support patterns. Patterns will be sections of the clothing that can be displayed as a different colour or opacity.

My proof of concept work has gone well, so tomorrow I will be focused on fully integrating the changes that I need to make. If I don't run into any roadblocks I'll have some pictures to share showing off what is possible with the new system. If I do run into roadblocks I'll at least be able to share those with you.

In theory both of those could be done either directly with the work I did today or with a little bit of modification. You just gave me a clever idea for variable skirt heights too: if the image mask was rendered as a gradient w/ the top of the skirt being 100% and the bottom being 0% I could use a hard cutoff to create a skirt mask of the correct length. Hmm, I'll have to think about this some more and maybe run some tests! Oh and there are some new clothing items that will be in the next update. Off the top of my head there's a new bra, a new vest, and a bunch of new hair styles. Once I put in some actual content producing work with this pattern system I'll be able to turn out a bunch of variations fairly quickly as well.

i dont want to even mention it, because i fully understand it is not the highest priority for the game, but i want more clothing in the game. Not necessarily completely new garments, but modifications of the existing ones, like shorter skirts, or different versions dress shirts (with/without sleeves, shorter/longer, buttoned up/slightly open/unbuttoned) now with this article i started thinking if you could use patterns to create new clothing, like creating a pattern that makes the bottom of the skirt fully invisible (full opacity), but i expect that this could lead to the clothing looking unnatural. Another "creative" idea that i had is to create ripped clothing or stained clothing, for events

It's nice that you want to make you already nice system progress towards awesome ^^
