Upgrade Joys and Woes
Added 2019-09-29 08:29:01 +0000 UTCEarlier this month I decided that since my PC does a lot of rendering for Lab Rats 2 I should upgrade my graphics card. I was previously running a gtx970 and bought a gtx2080ti to replace it, because if it's for work on top of my own recreational gaming I can justify the extra expense.
Two days ago I installed the new beast and set it to work rendering out a new position set that will be included in v0.21 (mostly for modder to take advantage of for now, I don't have any content written for it). Immediately there was a problem - my version of Daz was old enough that the 20xx series of cards weren't recognised. No problem, a quick update to Daz was all that was required and we're good to go again. Except one of the updates to Daz changed their scripting API, and worse still that change was completely undocumented in their change log. That took a night of detective work to resolve, most of it spent poking at classes to see what methods they had and divining what they did based purely on their name, but resolved it was! That brings an end to the upgrade woes.
Now onto the upgrade joys! The previous rendering settings I used in Daz for my gtx970 set a maximum rendering time of three minutes per image (pattern masks were much shorter). Before restarting the rendering I tried to account for the improved performance by lowering the max time to 90 seconds, anticipating a doubling of speed. In practice most images are finished rendering based on quality now after 60 to 65 seconds. This means the new card is giving us a 3x increase in rendering speed as well as an increase in image quality! Overall I'm quite happy with the performance increase (it also has way more LED's than my old card, which is a larger factor in my happiness than I care to admit.)
Besides the hardware upgrade I have been working on the v0.21 release. My most recent efforts have been focused on adding content to the dating system: there are now three types of dates that you can take people on, with each type being more serious than the last. In addition to the previously existing romantic dinner date you can now take girls out to lunch or to see a movie. I still have some more writing to do for those events, and I want to squeeze in some last minute stuff with Lily and perhaps the girlfriend role, so it's time for me to get back to work!

2019-09-29 13:11:17 +0000 UTCAnd 2080ti is anything but ideal for rendering. Its just wont bring the value for money in performance. The best performance/money is still the 1080 non Ti if especially if you can use more than one. (Of course if you also use it for gaming that is different and if this makes you happy and increase you motivation and work rate that is another factor to consider. )
