I finished off my automate-every-single-thing-I-possibly-can binge a few days ago and turned my attention to actually producing some test content for Lab Rats 2. Now that the entire render process requires next to zero input from me I've been able to switch to a more render-time intensive method of creating character sprites. This rework has made it possible to have much more exaggerated body type differences (each bodytype/breast combindation is now it's own image, instead of being two layered on top of each other). Because I was going to re-render my entire library of outfits anyways I took some time to modify the thin and curvy body types so that they differ more noticeably from the baseline.
Another thing to note that my automation work has made possible is transparent clothing. This opens up a wide range of clothing options going forward now, starting with fishnets, stockings, and mesh clothing like what's shown above. The same effect has made the different hair styles look more natural.
The re-render process wasn't completely painless; A couple of pieces of clothing produced some strange rendering artifacts that I'll have to investigate, and a few items were accidently left off my render list. Overall though I'm considering the work done a huge success, and it paves the way for me to move forward with other aspects of the game.
For the immediate future I have two things on the chopping block that I want to get done: First, I want to add some new facial features, eye styles, etc. so that we can start generating characters that look and feel different. I need to do some experimentation to figure out if I'm better off keeping the general head shape and modifying features within it, or replacing the entire head and layering them onto headless bodies. Second, I want to look into changing character height. I'm probably going to do this by scaling the character images up or down dynamically when they're created. A side issue I'll have to deal with are breast sizes being artificially increased (for tall people) and decreased (for short people); I'll correct for this by bumping people up or down a real (ie. image based) breast size so it matches their character stats. This should ensure a D sized cup looks the same across all heights.
