I think we need an episode based in the Tardis. It seems like we've barely seen the Tardis so far so it'd be nice to have an episode like that to kind of ground it in the story, instead of being just a place they're in to bookend the story. Also: 36:25 It would be possible to strap a rocket onto an asteroid and send it towards a planet

Did the TARDIS just appear or did I miss something

Hi! Listener here who's mainly here just to listen to you two talk and is not actually watching doctor who yet. So to answer your question towards the end Mike, yes.

It took me a while to understand why I don't like this season and especially this episode. It feels to be like a historical show that doctor who appears in not a doctor who show with historical elements and I don't really enjoy historically accurate shows too much. If we do history I like having it have a warewolf or clock men. Not serious show on the Pakistanian split, or Rosa parks.

Was it just me or did everything feel have fisted? Maybe it was the historic background they had to conform to?

From a story-telling point of view the writer's hands were tied. If Nan's first love was going to be killed by a mob then the Doctor couldn't stop it from happening but they couldn't force Yaz to make it happen either. If he had been killed by aliens or because some plot of the Doctor's had gone wrong it would have weakened the story. One very nice trick they played though was how they made it impossible for the Doctor to face-off the mob. The aliens warned her that it wouldn't work and she would get them all killed. "You're not supposed to be here; you're messing things up. If you don't all leave quickly then we will stand over your bodies." We didn't notice the warning. Everyone at the time thought it was a threat. But when the Doctor played that dialogue back in her head, she would have known that she couldn't make a difference.

I thought this was a pretty good episode but like you guys touched on, it kinda didn't need to be a Doctor Who story. It kinda felt like a story that had been written about the Partition that they turned into a Doctor Who script by throwing in some aliens. The story about the family really wasn't any different for the Doctor and crew's involvement. Still a good story though! Also, Christmas Carol is definitely the best Christmas special. It's really the only one that's actually a proper Christmas story and not just one that happens to be set at Christmas, and the use of time travel in it is amazing. Also also, I think you missed out the last Tennant Christmas special, which was the first part of the End of Time (ie his final story). I don't think Capaldi's Christmas episodes were too bad. Last Christmas, I honestly barely remember but it had some cool dream stuff in it that I thought was well done, and also Nick Frost as Santa. Husbands of River Song was alright but I've never been fond of River Song as a character so that kinda made me annoyed at it. It was a mostly enjoyable story though. I remember really enjoying the Return of Doctor Mysterio although it took me far too long to realise it had Goku from the awful DBZ movie in it, except he wasn't terrible. I recall Twice Upon a Time being another great episode too.

There was an establishing shot, for only a few seconds mind you, but there was one.

I had to go back and check various scenes in this episode because I was sure that the demons were threatening. I was wrong; it was very well done dialogue. The only awkward bit I thought was how the character of the younger brother in his first scene didn't match that of the later scenes.

Love this podcast, I think if I didn't like Doctor Who I'd still love this, your so fun to listen to. Also wow closing theme.

The best Christmas specials are both Big Finish audios: the fun pantomime The One Doctor and the terrifying existential nightmare The Chimes of Midnight.

I was hoping this would be the episode where Yaz got a character and stopped standing in the background, making the occasional comment and sometimes remembering she's a police officer. She's still (in my opinion) a one dimensional meh character. The writers should try to give us villains who are menacing, not what seem to be bad guys who are really ok, or totally crap space racists. If the scripts don't improve I for one will stop watching the show again.

I wish I knew that Lego tip before I moved, they didn't look too smashing when they arrived.
