I'd love to join you rockhounding in Western NC but " sadly" I now live on Hawai'i. ( We got volcanoes but no fossils and everything is igneous. ) Grandma and I used to spend our summers rockhounding all over NC. Here's the guidebook. ( https://www.deq.nc.gov/energy-mineral-and-land-resources/geological-survey/informationcirculars/ncgs-information-circular-24-mineral-collecting-sites-ncpdf ) .. Oh yeah, you can find Megalodon teeth in the surf at some beaches and the gravel under a lot of roads in SENC is mostly fossils. See if you can get access to a marl pit down there. BBQ isn't bad either.
