Back in high school, on Valentine's Day, there was a fundraiser the student council organized called Rose-A-Grams. Essentially, you would pay 10 bucks, and you could send a rose to anyone in the school with a special note.

These Rose-a-Grams would then be hand delivered to the recipient during one of their classes.

I think the student council used the money they raised to hire a DJ for the Valentine's Day Dance. So this was also a kind of quirky opportunity to ask someone to the dance if you wanted to.

There was a girl I had a crush on in my Science class but I was way too shy to say anything to her. So, like any bleeding heart romantic, I decided to send her Rose-A-Gram.

It wasn't a crazy poem or anything. It said...

"I think you're cool so here's a rose. Signed, Eric from your science class"

Now in hindsight, this was probably not that clear a message. And the tone was perhaps too subtle to really represent how I felt about her. Or that I wanted to ask her to the dance.

I saw her two days later when we had science class again. She walked up to me and said "Hey Eric."

"Hi." I replied.

Then she went over to sit down at her lab table at the other side of the classroom.

There was no mention of the Rose-a-Gram or anything.

We didn't really speak that much and had different circles of friends. So there was no way to get any intel on what happened.

Fast forward a few years, we were now in the senior class and were at our Graduation and Convocation.

I thought, I should say something to her. But then decided not to and instead moved thousands of miles away to study in Montreal.
