Commission-Robin Hood

Hello everyone! Hope everyone's well.

Unfortunately due to ongoing computer problems it's been hard getting to everything. I replaced my GPU (R.I.P. my wallet) so hopefully that's end of it.

This illustration was made for a World Anvil contest winner. World Anvil are special guests on Gacucon this year and to thank them for coming along I said I'd draw prizes for some of their contest winners.

I was asked to design a character that the winner is writing a story about named "Robin Hood" who wields a bow that fires laser projectiles. While I know this is all fake and this sort of thing has been made before I spent some time thinking about the bow and how it could work.

At first where the arrow would sit was just an open hole but it felt too plain. In their email they described it like a lightsaber so the idea of any of the actual laser making remote contact to skin seemed like a bad idea. I decided to mount some weird sort of camera lens to focus the arrow and keep it in place and added one of the knobs you see on cameras to make adjustments to the shot. I figured her drawing arm could hold some sort of grip with a trigger to send the arrow off. In retrospect I didn't consider that grip flying forward on release. Oops. lol I was just too focused on her not touching hot lasers. The whole thing is just really impractical but I hope it looks cool at least.

I was also asked to make her wearing a tight dress torn at the bottom and using the robin bird as a reference for the design. Started real simple and plain but as I get to the end I thought to add some minor details to push the sci-fi theme on it a bit ultimately making it more of a two piece dress. They didn't want her to feel like a damsel in the distress so I thought this change made it feel little more ranger like.

In any case it was a fun little illustration to make.
