A trip down memory lane pt. 2: Zé's art throughout the ages
Added 2022-07-16 10:03:36 +0000 UTCHi friends,
As promised, here's a look at some of the old art I found at my folks house. Organized from oldest to newest.
My love for the spooky stuff goes waaay back.
Age: around 11 - 13 years old
A spread of my very first published comic, in a Portuguese zine. 16 years old, maybe?
Here's a few pieces of one of my early characters: Max Munstermann, occult detective!
Age :15, 16, 17?
I wanted to be Mignola so bad!
The max character eventually morphed into this guy with green glasses. I think he was called Frank Stein. I'd later re-use the metallic arm for the main character of my old webcomic Witch Gauntlet.
This cover was the second time I was published,in the same Portuguese zine. Very clearly inspired by my buddy Ralph Niese at this time. RIP Ralph!
I was around 18.
One of my very first self published zines. Lots of cartoony experimentation and a more punk vibe.
University days...
Poster for a show held at me and my friend's apartment while in uni.
Pages of my first Witch Gauntlet comic.
These were published in a massive A3 zine with 3 other friends for the Portuguese underground comix publisher Chili Com Carne.
Witch Gauntlet pages published in a magazine called Strange Kids Club.
A bit proto Andromeda, this one.
Mangled copy of a official Creepshow poster I did for some print company. I barely remember this.
Witch Gauntlet led me to a bunch of cover work for Cartoon network comic adaptations published by Boom! Studios.
Eventually I did a 200 page graphic novel for them.
Around this time I started to get tired of the cartoony side of things and shifted slowing towards the realism style I have today.
Also found this sketch for a A2 sized spread from a collaboration that went no where. A biblical comic. I think I have the inked pages somewhere, let me know if you'd like to see them.
I found piles and piles more but this is a pretty good sampling of all the twist and turns until I arrive at what I do today. Kinda crazy how all over the place all this stuff is in retrospective.
Have a great weekend,
Zé
