Peaky Blinders S5 Episode 5

It’s so interesting to me that the “between period” isn’t taught much in the USA. I’m Croatian, and it’s been HEAVILY taught at our schools from different perspectives many times. But I guess it makes sense cause Europe was more affected by it than USA? When it comes to UK, they had a very strong rise in fascism that was closely connected to their classism and their sense of superiority over other races (imperialism). (Eugenics for example played a big part too). There was a close connection to nazism too through the Kings brother who met Hitler and was his big fan. There was a group of British aristocrats who were openly flirting with him and supporting him and there was a plan in place for UK “joining” Germany as its “vassal” that was encouraged and promoted by this group of aristocrats, kings brother, and politicians as Mosely. The plan was, after Hitler wins, to put kings brother as a new king and Mosely would be the head of the government. The fact that British royal family was of German origin made the thing even more blurry. But bc the actual king WAS against Hitler, as well as Churchill, the UK stood on the side of the war that we know today. But the period leading up to it, wasn’t so clearly black and white in British politics. It wasn’t JUST in Britain but in other countries in Europe as well, these ideals of fascism, communism were perceived in the beginning more as just political “paths” the way see to day “left and right“ or liberals and conservatives for example. At the time, people didn’t necessarily see where it was going. And fascism and nazism seemed as answers to nations who were hit by financial crisis and who were hit hard by World War I. Fascism had this reputation of being „forward thinking“ and the future and it was aaall about improvement and futurism which made it very attractive. Nazism was all of that as well plus the „nationalism“ part. And it’s also important to remember that Germans lost WWI but were convinced that they lost unfairly and were betrayed. So now they had a financial crash, lost the war, were paying war reparations, economy dead, their national pride non existent, and here comes an ideology that told them that they were actually superior and that they would rise from the ashes. And when it comes to antisemitism, antisemitism was deeply routed in European history and „mind“. It wasn’t at all a new thing and bc the Jewish community WAS very successful and rich and creme de la Creme in basically every European country, everyone found it was very easy to use them as scapegoats. Hitler just took the sentiment that was very well routed in Europes history and used it to his advantage.

couple of quick points from the mosely speak - yes the great depression was a major factor in Nazi support growing (in the later years of the 20s it waned as the german economy grew) and anti-semites believe the jews run the financial world, so the depression would obviously be there fault to a nazi. And fascism is hard to define, so in school they boil it down to a very simple definition. The horse-shoe model Steph talks about is better done as a X Y graph, X for left-right, Y for authoritarian vs libertarian.
