Joe Bob’s Thought of the Day: Streaming Edition

The reason subscription-supported streaming doesn't work is that you're asking the viewer to make a decision about the content. He constantly has to ask himself, "Is this worth it?" He's constantly noticing how many shows suck. He's likely to end up unhappy with his deal.

The reason ad-supported streaming does work is that the viewer IS the content. He's being sold by the streaming service to the advertiser. He's essentially whored himself out. He's still noticing how many shows suck but he's saying "It's free! It's free!" Because he puts no value on his own time. He essentially agrees to sit through a series of time-share presentations in return for never having to think about whether the content is worth it or not. He's happy.

There is a silly case to be made for nostalgic ads, although nostalgia kinda taints our perception of anything. I have a Youtube channel whose primary purpose is to host videos of commercial/bumper breaks that aired between movies and there are a surprising amount of people that're interested in that stuff. Before I removed them to help support Darcy's efforts here, I had maybe a half dozen commercial break/host segments from Monstervision up there and the view totals for the videos were comparable between the "Just Joe Bob" versions and the Joe Bob *and* commercial versions. It's also possible that modern ads are just terrible. Or maybe in 30 years, people will be trying to look up the ads they're watching now on Youtube.

Joe Bob fighting to bring back the glorious days of JUST cable TV. :)

It’s a good thing some services have specific shows that carry all the weight.

LOL Joe Bob i ready to start his own streaming service! He's got it fured out better than Disney.

I tolerate the ad supported services if they have content I can't find otherwise. I hate commercials. If there is one thing that burns my bacon it's subscription services that still have ads. Fuck that.

Comes down to making decisions. We suck at that now

AGREED!!!!

And the elephant in the room is Shudder

Damn you for being right!

Same. If my GF could let go of Netflix, Shudder would be the only streaming service I pay for. With all the glorious trash on Tubi and the Criterion discs at my local library, I’d be fine.

One solution is to be a strategic subscriber. If like me, you don’t watch much during the week, just pay for one service (besides Shudder) at a time. For instance, wait until all the episodes of American Gods are posted, subscribe to Starz (or use a free trial code), make that your viewing for the month, then cancel. Due to their numerous exploitation options and Columbo, I watch Tubi more than services I pay for. Check out Butt Boy -you’ll thank me later.

Much like the impending Discovery/HBO merger, I figure the next few years will continue to see the further coalescence of all these many streamers.

Mr Trick

I whole heartedly agree with this statement! You buy these subscriptions but end up watching things like Tubi, Pluto, or YouTube the majority of the time. I miss the old days where you didn’t have a choice. You want to watch this movie but hate commercials too bad if you want to watch the movies you need to have the commercials and you just dealt with it and we were all still happy and entertained
