Joe Bob’s Thought of the Day: Witchy Edition

Why does the Wicked Witch come from the west? For two of the screenwriters, it makes sense. Noel Langley was from Durban, South Africa. Edgar Allan Woolf was from New York City. But the third screenwriter, Florence Ryerson, was from Glendale, and director Victor Fleming was also a local--from La Canada in what is today Flintridge. And why does the Good Witch come from the north? Was there a Canadian ghostwriter? If Dorothy had gone straight north from Kansas, she would have ended up in Winnipeg, where she would be safe, instead of El Lay, where Margaret Hamilton keeps trying to steal her shoes.

So witches come from the home of Eve 6 and Armenians. Who knew?

I’m sure there’s an “I’m My Own Grandpa”-type explanation for this!

Baum was born and raised in upstate New York. He did die in El Lay though.🤔

Oh, totally, but that's a far cry from making a square and labeling "North", "South", "East", "West" aaaaand DONE!

Maybe it's because North is where Santa comes from therefore everything up north is magical and good.

Hey, Tolkien had "Easterlings" and "Southrons" (both bad, or at least misguided, guys) and the "Men of the West" (aka the Dúnedain), so he wasn't above cardinal direction labels!

That's pretty freaking funny! 🤣

Glenda is the most evil of all as she used Dorothy to kill her last remaining sister to overtake all of Oz. Good my arse! :D

How 'bout cause L. Frank Baum wasn't exactly Tolkien when it came to drawing maps and it's easy to divide things up into quadrants? I can't guarantee this is the first time the layout was used in a fantasy novel, but it sure as hell wasn't the last. https://tinyurl.com/3899y4hf

Not to derail the conversation, but wouldn't these questions be better addressed to L. Frank Baum?

I always thought Wicked Witch of the West was just playing with alliteration. But your point about the North makes sense. Canadians are known for being so polite. Of course the good witch came from up there. Gotta wonder about the witch from NYC. My first thought is she'd be scary - but you never know.
